"Admin Area" button not showing

Everyone can contribute. Help move this issue forward while earning points, leveling up and collecting rewards.

Summary

"Admin Area" button is missing from left side bar.

Steps to reproduce

On a self-hosted instance, as a user with admin privileges (image):

  • Sign out

What is the current bug behavior?

The "Admin Area" button is not shown.

The only way to get into the admin area now is by manually adding /admin to the URL of your instance. You then get the usual "Re-authentication required" prompt, and only after reauthenticating the "Admin Area" button is shown:

What is the expected correct behavior?

The "Admin Area" button should be shown in the bottom right of the left side bar for users with admin privileges, whether the user is reauthenticated or not.

For users with admin privileges, there should always be a way in the UI to get to the admin area (with reauthentication when needed).

Results of GitLab environment info

We are running the official GitLab docker image, and this behaviour is seen in images gitlab/gitlab-ee:16.7.0-ee.0 and gitlab/gitlab-ee:16.8.2-ee.0.
