Fast-forward merge using GitLab API

We would like to add a feature proposal for a way to do a fast-forward merge using GitLab API; the problem is that we don't want to change the project settings for everyone. We just want to be able to do the fast forward merge using API, but without changing anything that applies to everyone. We still want devs to create a merge request with commit message, but also be able to do the ff merge using API.
