What’s New Notifications for Reactions Reacting to messages offers a quick way of answering or acknowleding your contact’s message. It may be a simple 👍 or it may carry emotions 😁😎 and meaning. So far, Gajim did not notify you when your contact reacted to one of your messages, and thus these reactions may have gone unnoticed, until you opened the chat again. With Gajim 2.4.5, you’ll get a notification for each reaction.

What’s New Link Previews When you receive a link, it may be unclear which kind of website it links to. Previews for links can help by adding context information, for example the website’s title and description. Many websites provide this meta data using the OpenGraph data format. Since Gajim 2.4.2, displaying this information is supported. At the moment few apps (e.g. Cheogram) send data for these previews. With this release, Gajim can also send preview data.

What’s New Gajim Setup for macOS Installing Gajim on macOS was possible for a while now, but it was inconvenient and difficult for most users. Setting up Gajim required using a terminal, manually installing dependencies and when installed, it did not offer proper system integration. Thanks to @Codimp and other contributors, installing Gajim on macOS is now done with a single click. With Gajim 2.4.2, we provide DMG setups for both x86 and ARM64 macOS architectures, allowing for a quick and easy setup of Gajim on your (or any other) Mac.

What’s New Read markers: You already know read markers for your chats, which look like: ‘Contact has read up to this point’. Now, Gajim supports read markers for group chats as well! For group chats, we went for a different approach though: Each participant’s read state is indicated by the participant’s profile picture next to the message which has been read. Since this is working pretty good, Gajim now uses this approach for regular chats as well.

This allows you to retract your messages, if you’ve mistakenly sent it to the wrong recipient or group chat. Please note that your counterpart needs to support this feature as well, as a retraction can only be considered an unenforceable request. In group chats, Gajim now allows you to block individual participants, if need arises. Blocking is available through each participant’s context menu.

February brings many bug fixes for the upcoming Gajim 1.3.1 release. The Profile window’s error handling has been improved, and selecting small images for an avatar should now work as expected. While fixing those bugs, we’ve been working on something big.

In November we worked on Chat Markers, a feature many of you had wished to see in Gajim. Chat Markers enable you to see whether your contact has read your messages, and they help Gajim to manage notifications if you read messages on your phone or other devices.

This month brought new features and many improvements for Gajim plugins (checkout the new file preview)! On the other side, we had to decide which plugins to keep and which ones have to go before the 1.2 release. During this month, Anonymous Login has been re-implemented and account badges have been added. If you’re using multiple accounts with Gajim, you should now be able to quickly recognize which account you’re chatting with.

This is the third development news post this year, and it’s covering big changes. Starting with this month, the new connection code is available in Gajim’s master branch. It allows better connection handling in difficult network situations and significantly improves connection speed. Building on top of these changes, we’d like to introduce Gajim’s completely rewritten account creation wizard. This month also brings some fixes for voice/video calls, which are the first steps to make this feature available again in the future.
