As global tensions rise and conflict escalates, Australia is being drawn deeper into US military strategy through AUKUS and broader military integration. Flatpak 1.16.4 Brings Important Security Fixes For Sandbox Escape & Deleting Host Files (phoronix.com)

Community iconc/linuxby
Karna@lemmy.ml

First up with Flatpak 1.16.4 is a fix for CVE-2026-34078, which is a security issue allowing a complete sandbox escape leading to host file access and code execution in the host context. Ouch. The issue is due to Flatpak portal accepting paths in the sandbox-expose options that can be app-controlled symlinks pointing at arbitrary paths. Due to this apps can access all host files and can be used as a primitive for gaining code execution in the host context. Disabling Flatpak Portal is another way to workaround this issue but can cause app problems. CVE-2026-34079 is also fixed and is for preventing arbitrary file deletion on the host file-system. CVE-2026-34079 stems from caching for ld.so removing outdated cache files without checking that the app controlled path to the outdated cache is in the cache directory.

MX Linux KDE appreciation post

Longtime Mint stickler here, never developed a taste for any other distro schools (Arch, Fedora, other buntus and Debians). But tried out MX after a long period of deferring and I am genuinely blown away. This distro has *everything I could have ever ask for - Debian stability coupled with advanced hardware support (with more recent zen kernels and drivers), a solid opinionated Plasma DE setup that is both minimalist and all-encompassing at the same time, and a full stock of sensible and pragmatic utilities to cover the boring stuff.

Google's AI doesn't seem to understand preferential voting

Community iconc/australiaby
Zagorath@quokk.au
A screenshot of a Google search for "member for aspley". The AI Overview states that it is Amanda Cooper of the Liberal National following the 2024 Queensland State election, and that she defeated sitting Labor member Bart Mellish who had held the seat since 2017. Two regular results are visible, Queensland Parliament's page for Mr Bart Mellish and Bart Mellish's personal site. Next to this, a bar graph is visible showing percentage of first preference votes in which Amanda Cooper received just about 43% of the vote and Bart Mellish received about 39%.

Amanda Cooper lost the election. It was a very close contest, only 31 votes once preferences were distributed. But Bart Mellish did win. Google knows this, all the top results show Bart Mellish's official pages, social media, and news/encyclopaedia articles about him.
