He attended Portsmouth Municipal College and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He made his first appearance...Read more on stage in 1944, and worked in the West End and Old Vic theaters in London and on Broadway in New York. He lived in the United States from the mid-eighties, and worked there in theater, television, and films. He had a tendency to play eccentric roles. Among his notable credits are A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Wicker Man (1973), Life Force (1985) and My Girl 2 (1994). He died on July 15, 2015 in Los Angeles, California, USA, at age 89.
