An American director, screenwriter, and producer, born in New York, USA, to a businessman and a theater producer. He attended the Juilliard School before entering the film industry. He worked with film director Stanley Kubrick and began his film career in sales and distribution. Then he optioned several novels with the intention of directing them himself, including "The Black Dahlia." He is also known for Paths of Glory (1957) and Lolita (1962).
