Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Bazzite is hands‑down the best thing to hit a handheld gaming rig in ages, and my ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme proves it. From the moment I slapped the ISO onto a USB and booted up, the OS felt like it was built for the machine, not forced onto it. The KDE-styled desktop is clean, lightweight and makes perfect use of the tiny screen without getting in the way of the action. Steam loads automatically and power usage can be manually controlled with the back buttons.

Performance is where Bazzite really flexes. Games pop straight onto the screen with zero lag, I must say that THE-FINALS runs quite well. The kernel is tuned for the Ally’s AMD Z1e GPU, and the power‑profiles keep the battery alive for a solid two a three hours of non‑stop play. Plugging the USB‑C dock into a monitor, keyboard and mouse is dead easy, the peripherals are recognised instantly and the display mirrors the handheld perfectly, turning the console into a full‑blown desktop gaming station.

Stability? Spot on. After weeks of marathon sessions I’ve never seen a crash or freeze, and updates, whether they’re game patches, driver tweaks or the occasional Steam Deck compatibility layer, slide in without a hitch. The community around Bazzite is active and responsive, pushing regular updates that keep drivers fresh and add handy tweaks for the newest hardware. Via Discord questions are answered relatively fast.

Bottom line: Bazzite gives you a polished, rock‑solid Linux experience that feels tailor‑made for handheld gaming. It turns the ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme into a versatile beast, whether you’re on the couch or docked at a desk. In short, Bazzite raises the bar for portable Linux gaming and makes every session feel awesome. Gaming on the couch hasn't been this fun.

Bazzite is an incredible version of Linux! The drivers are all pre-loaded and just work. The UJUST utility makes it super easy to load common packages and modify the GRUB boot loader to add your Windows dual boot partition. Learning to work around the immutable stuff is a learning curve but once you learn it, it works really well. I did struggle getting used to immutable, however, I am glad I did because it works so well and it's so solid. You don't need to worry about ruining your installation.

Also, immutable isn't such a big deal anymore because Python now requires specific loading of libraries on even mutable distros so you might as well use immutable because the tool set is similar and immutable has more benefits. For example, on Linux Mint you used to just be able to load Python libraries by running pip install to load your libraries but you aren't able to do this anymore because it ended up corrupting the base install too many times. The tools are now the same between mutable and immutable. In the situations where you want to modify the base OS, you can always choose to stack the files on top of the base in rare situations where you don't have any other options. I have used this a couple times and it works great.

I use Bazzite as my main desktop for gaming, programming and regular work (IE. email, teams, etc). They market it as a gaming OS but the truth is that it's Fedora with everything already loaded and configured. It's basically a super enhanced version of Fedora. The Wayland desktop works great and the sound system is also super solid.

The best part is the plasma desktop. It looks amazing and they give you a ton of useful widgets I rely on. Linux Mint looks boring compared to Bazzite's desktop. I can't emphasize how useful UJUST is - UJUST updates everything, loads entire packages, etc. Dual booting Bazzite with Windows is super simple and solid.

Also, Bazzite is one of the only distros I have used that is able to handle secure boot properly. I kept secure boot on in the BIOS because I already had Windows configured to secure boot and I needed a Linux distro that could install under secure boot. Bazzite handles it smoothly without any issues. It walks you through the entire setup. I have Bazzite and WIndows both using secure boot.

I don't think you can go wrong with Bazzite. It has some pretty cutting edge stuff but it's all solid.

One note - They pulled displaylink from the distro so if you have displaylink docking stations or adapters, they won't work. I ended up buying two USB C to displayport cables and used the USB C ports to hook up my monitors.

I've been using Bazzite Linux recently, and I have to say it's one of the most polished gaming-oriented distributions available today. The installation is extremely simple and fast, and everything works out of the box — from KDE Plasma itself to drivers and pre-configured gaming tools like Steam, Lutris, Heroic, and Wine/Proton.

Being an immutable distribution built on a Fedora-based atomic system, Bazzite provides stability and safety with atomic updates that can be rolled back if needed, without interfering with gaming or daily workflows. The system supports Flatpak and Distrobox containers, keeping the core OS clean while letting you install apps and development tools seamlessly.

I particularly love its portability: installed on an external SSD, I can move the system across different machines with no issues, keeping all configurations and libraries intact. KDE is smooth, customizable, and responsive, while the gaming optimizations really make a difference for both native Linux titles and Steam/Proton games.

Overall, Bazzite strikes a rare balance: a ready-to-use, reliable Linux system that’s fully optimized for gaming, yet portable and robust enough for productivity or development. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a plug-and-play gaming distro without sacrificing stability or flexibility.
