Two Minutes Hate #1 - The awakening of the EU

Wow, things are happening! The EU has woken up and discovered open source. 🤯 And they’re even starting to gather information on how OSS is actually made. Surely, in a few months we’ll get some kind of groundbreaking resolution that magically fixes it all.

But let’s not be too hard on our European leaders. It’s not their fault. That multi‑year AI‑driven tech boom apparently wasn’t visible from here — not “past all that green.” 🙃

So let’s help them find answers to their questions. They’re surprisingly simple:

Repeal about 80% of the regulations.

Don’t come up with monstrosities like eID, CSAR, and a CBDC.

Stop putting roadblocks in developers’ way and let them work freely.

(bonus) If 1–3 are done, we can do without subsidies and grants.

And here’s the GH article: Help shape the future of open source in Europe

Stack Overflow: Vision, Features & Developer Insights

“Cultivate community. Power learning. Unlock growth.” – the new Stack Overflow mission

 Vision & brand simplification

Announced at WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2025, Stack Overflow aims to become the most trusted source for technologists. The public Q&A network (all of Stack Exchange) is simply Stack Overflow, while ads, enterprise tools and data licensing are grouped under Stack Overflow Business.
Source: A new era of Stack Overflow.

 Community-driven re-brand vote

On July 10, 2025 the company launched its first full re-brand poll with two logo concepts (modern “stack” vs. minimalist “(-_-)” face). Voting closed on July 15.
Source: Vote on our new identity.

 Four flagship experiments

Feature

Status

Why it matters

Community Activity

pilot

Real-time pulse of active users & new questions.

Chat relaunch

redesigned

Lower rep gate, new lobby for quick collaboration.

stackoverflow.ai

alpha/beta

Natural-language search with cited SO answers.

Coding Challenges

live

Gamified skill-building and recognition.

 Roadmap highlights (Q3–Q4 2025)

Simplified Post flow – broader question types without quality loss.

Rich threaded comments – lower rep limits.

1-rep voting trial plus stronger sock-puppet detection.
See Meta thread Upcoming initiatives on Stack Overflow… for details.

 Data partnership: Snowflake Marketplace

Since 3 June 2025 the complete Stack Exchange corpus (150 + sites) is available on Snowflake Marketplace as a Cortex Knowledge Extension, providing high-quality training data for GenAI.

 Key Developer Survey 2025 stats

84 % of developers already use AI tools (2024: 76 %).

46 % actively distrust AI outputs.

69 % of agent users report higher productivity.

Python adoption jumps to 57.9 % (+7 pp).

82 % visit Stack Overflow monthly; 25 % daily.
Source: Developer Survey 2025.

 What to watch

Trust layer – SO positions itself as human-verified knowledge over AI.

Lowered gates – faster onboarding but increased moderation load.

Data-as-a-Service – new revenue streams via Snowflake and AI partners.

Re-brand outcome – litmus test for company-community alignment.

Dev tip: Try the stackoverflow.ai beta – ask in natural language, then dive into citations to verify answers.
