If Joe Biden is breaking a sweat about GOP efforts to impeach him, he certainly didn’t show it today.
“Well, I tell you what, I don’t know quite why, but they just knew they wanted to impeach me,” the president told donors and supporters at a reelection fundraiser in Virginia tonight. “And now, the best I can tell they want to impeach me because they want shutdown the government,” he added of the green light Speaker Kevin McCarthy gave yesterday to an inquiry by House Republicans into “serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct.”
Instantly mocked by most Beltway pundits and surely linked to business deals by Hunter Biden over his father’s long political career, this impeachment is widely seen as a hope to distract the public from the potential shutdown of the government on September 30 if a dozen of appropriations bills aren’t passed and signed by Biden in the new two weeks. On a realpolitik level, the long threatened Biden impeachment seems to be partly a move by McCarthy to save his Speakership from dissenting hardcore members of his caucus and a flex by Donald Trump to show his control over the GOP and to hobble the man who beat him in 2020.
Watch on Deadline
In his first remarks on the impeachment subject, Biden was dismissive of the long time efforts of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and others to start up efforts to remove him from office.
“Everybody always asked about impeachment,” he told the deep-pocket crowd under a tent at the McLean, VA residence of David Frederick and Sophie Lynn, according to pool reports. “I get up every day, not a joke, not focused on impeachment, I’ve got job to do. I’ve got to deal with issues that affect the American people every single solitary day.”
Biden then moved on to other topics and familiar tropes Wednesday of Bidenomics, NATO unity and making a women’s right to choose the law of the land again.
On Tuesday, the White House was a bit more verbose on the subject on impeachment.
“House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they’ve turned up no evidence of wrongdoing, said spokesman Ian Sams of what could end up being the fifth impeachment of a president in American history if the MAGA-dominated GOP and their razor thin majority can pull it off to send something to the Senate. “His own Republican members have said so. He vowed to hold a vote to open impeachment, now he flip-flopped because he doesn’t have support. This is extreme politics at its worst.”
If Biden’s impeachment does move forward based on the allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction and corruption,” according to the Bakersfield, CA representing McCarthy, the current president would take an infamous place in the history books with Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. None of the previous impeachments ever resulted in a conviction, including the two times the currently legally challenged former Celebrity Apprentice host was impeached.
Of course, in what is already shaping up to be an election for the history books, 2024 may be the first race in which one candidate is being impeached and the other is facing multiple indictments.
“They want to shut down the government..”
Sounds like the best thing to happen in politics..shut down the government. ALL politicians are power hungry sociopaths.
Anything a politician wants to accomplish has an ulterior motive, which personally benefits them..A pox on all of their homes
How about if the Administration tried to help out in our industry’s labor disputes??
He’s a corporate hack. Hasn’t said a word. Hasn’t come to LA, offered assistance, nothing. A mute. That’s what you voted for. He hasn’t mentioned the strike in weeks.
Where have you been? Back in July, the White House spokesperson Robyn Patterson said “The President believes all workers — including actors — deserve fair pay and benefits.” This is why the White House staff has not been on The View or anything else-to support the striking workers.
No one thinks that Netflix needs two CEOs with 50 Million bonuses etc. But, what should be concerning is that a lot of tv movies and other entertainment is currently filming in Hollywood North, as well as in Europe..and likely beyond.
As for the impeachment, they ARE stalling the government and pushing for a shutdown which hurts regular people. And the NYTimes just revealed that the impeachment is Trump’s idea as he has been talking to House Republicans.
BTW they are not for labor. Reagan shut down the unions in the 80s. When are people going to understand that Republicans are only for Corporations?
Wow is all I can say!!🤐🤐🤐😳😳😳
They don’t want to shut down the government. They want to find out why you have 20 shell companies and how you became a multimillionaire on a public servant’s salary.
Selective outrage is a very unflattering yet consistent look onRepublicans. As you didn’t say a word about the millions that the Trump family made both while serving in the White House and after they exited the White House, particularly from Saudi Arabia, it’s truly the most laughable form of hypocrisy.
It’s all to deflect from the 91 criminal felony indictments that their MAGA mafia boss has piled up against him.
If the Republicans were truly concerned about families using the power of the White House as their own piggy bank, they would’ve been all over the previous president and his family, particularly for giving them government jobs they weren’t qualified to do and asking for too secret security clearances.
The Republicans didn’t say boo when the Trump organization reaped millions of taxpayer dollars for the Secret Service and others to stay at Trump resorts. An organization, btw, that thanks to us FINALLY seeing his taxes, we now know has over 60 shell companies.
Worse, they didn’t bat an eye at the millions of dollars Ivanka made from easing Chinese restrictions on her product patents WHILE she was serving in the White House. And the Republicans didn’t say a thing about the the huge Saudi investment deal Jared made when they exited the White House which followed the $10B Saudi arms deal Jared brokered (which also shielding the Saudis from congressional outrage and any U.S. repercussions over the Koshoggi murder.)
No, nothing to see there, Speaker McCarthy.
The House Republicans have zero moral high ground, particularly after they stood by that corrupt narcissist who lost an election, pushed election conspiracies after losing his court challenges from lack of evidence, and then tried to overturn the election and incited an attack on our nation’s capitol.
Wait a minute, they don’t plan to do a thing about George Santos, who has several fraud charges against him. But this, this game of insurrection, they will keep playing at. Okay. well, look, from the outside looking in, nothing pleases me more than witnessing the fall of the American Memepire. Sept. 11th may have taken decades, but it divided the country and its ripe for the picking.
Unlike Donnie’s game of “Hide the Tax Returns,” Biden hasn’t tried to hide anything. The Republicans are grasping desperately at straws here, and it’s really quite embarrassing, especially since they haven’t come up with a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing.
You’re delusional.
Ummm, we’re sorry you disagree with reality?
Sad to see that you don’t even know what that word means. Someone smacking you with cold, hard facts is obviously not being “delusional.”
Leave it to a Republican to call the truth “delusional.” Nothing scares them more.
The truth is considered delusional now? Why does it scare you so much?
Since when are proven facts delusional? What part of this is confusing to you, kiddo?
Exactly. The corruption of Biden and his family is so glaringly obvious it’s amazing it’s taken this long for Congress to notice.
What are “Things a Republican would say in sheer desperation when faced with the harshness of reality?”
Huzzah, I got it right!
“The corruption of Biden and his family is so glaringly obvious”
Right, it’s SO glaringly obvious what with all the non-existent evidence of any wrongdoing whatsoever. How does the rest of your fairy tale go?
Derp. Sworn testimony is evidence. There is plenty of evidence.
keep drinking the Kool-aid dude. And don’t forget the Jewish laser beams and the drinking of children’s blood. Those are glaringly obvious as well. And oh, not a big-mouthed braggart who lost, tried to cheat, deny, steal, and oh yes, inspired an insurrection. But wait, those were “actors.” Because it’s easier for your cult to believe than watching your fellow nutjobs revolting live on TV.
Just stop.
Why? Is the truth THAT frightening to you?
They certainly wouldn’t want to know how Donald made his millions. Then there’d be an even bigger shitshow to add to his already considerable shitshow.
As obvious as all that election fraud in 2020 lol? Republicans don’t have a good track record with factual evidence
Name just one politician that has a good track record..
Your bias clouds rational thought. Think for yourself
Sounds like you’ve been drinking the Republican Kool-Aid, kiddo. Might want to cut back a bit before you really embarrass yourself (even more, that is).
Let’s talk about the $2 billion Kushner got from the Saudis for no apparent reason, after Tangeranus stole a bunch of classified documents and took them to Florida. Let’s talk about “I need you to find me 11,780 votes, Mr. Raffensberger. “Let’s talk about seditious conspiracy on January 6th. Let’s talk about the fact that MAGA is nothing more than a Russian divide-and-conquer psy-op with Donnie Moscow as their Manchurian Candidate.
Why aren’t any of you Biden apologists capable of writing a coherent sentence?
Why do Trump apologists not know how to spell and type all in BIG GLARING CAPS?
Sad when you have to compare someone’s corruption against someone else’s corruption-
At the end of the day, it’s all wrong.
Term limits, and campaign finance reform are the only way to battle it at that levels.
