September marked the 90th birthday of Arvo Pärt. The Estonian composer’s unique brand of minimalism, or “tintinnabulation” as he described it, has entranced generations, and his blend of simplicity with profound emotional and spiritual depth has been celebrated in two fine releases. First, CREDO, a touching tribute conducted by Pärt’s close friend and frequent collaborator, Paavo Järvi. And an exquisite choral release explores some of the composer’s lesser-known but equally affecting choral works. Among other highlights, don’t miss the lithe, spontaneous music-making of Anastasia Kobekina, whose personal, intimate account of the Bach Cello Suites couples prayer-like introspection with buoyant high drama. A recording to cherish for years to come.
