Zhivago, before it was Zhivago Zhivago started out in 1998 my studio on 5th street and Avenue C, L.E.S. of New York City. Originally for a club project that never saw commercial release. My Friend Elhadj — we were both DJing at a little spot called Baraza— came over to record a kind of party vocal track (think “Brooklyn in the house” etc.) but in Wolof, one of the Senegalese languages from his region of the country. I loved the sound of Elhadj’s voice and the sound of the Wolof language plus I’ve never been a lyrics person— always focused more on sound. After the track was included on the recent ALFOS compilation, I had the idea to revisit the track. These two remixes are the result. As to the meaning of the name Zhivago Zhivago — it means absolutely nothing. I just liked the sound. Jonny Sender

This lot are running punked-up, grubby, streetwise electronic music at the moment. Their level of quality control is insane. Every original track and every remix is a winner. Tim Burdsey
