| BCMM Celebrates $8 Million NIH Award for QMAC Expansion | |
|
We are excited to announce that BCMM has received an $8 million award from the NIH Office of Research Infrastructure Programs. Under the leadership of Dr. Susan Lynch, the award will support the expansion and modernization of the Quantitative Metabolite Analysis Center (QMAC), initially launched in 2021. The upgraded facility will advance our capabilities in molecular-level analysis using cutting-edge mass spectrometry.
Covering 3,100 square feet of space on the Parnassus Heights campus, the facility will centralize resources for optimal research efficiency and accessibility. The modernized QMAC will promote innovative research, education, training, and diverse workforce development, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability. It aims to become a leading center in metabolomics, fostering new analytical tools and interdisciplinary collaboration.

| | | BCMM Celebrates the Renovated Gnotobiotic Mouse Research Facility
We are happy to announce the completion of the renovation of the Gnotobiotic Core Facility. This significant project, launched in 2020, was made possible through collaborative efforts and funding from BCMM, UCSF leadership, various stakeholders, and the Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research.
Led by Dr. Jessie Turnbaugh, the newly renovated and expanded Gnotobiotic Core Facility enhances experimental throughput, providing researchers with improved capabilities for their studies. With the increase in experimental and medium breeding isolators and the potential for further expansion with minimal additional investment, the facility allows for more studies to be conducted simultaneously. Additionally, the upgraded facility offers new opportunities for in-house training in gnotobiotic animal research, fostering the development of expertise in this critical area of microbiome science.
This renovation marks a significant milestone for BCMM, further solidifying our commitment to advancing microbiome research.

Art Meets Science: A Memorable Evening at UCSF
The Art-Science Soiree, organized by BCMM, was a success! The evening started with an inspiring talk by Prof. David Schneider from Stanford, who shared insights on how art influences his scientific research. He even brought along some of his artwork to illustrate his points.
Following the talk, participants gathered for a lively social event where the artistic talents of our colleagues were on display—drawings, sculptures, photographs, and posters, accompanied by live music, fostered an environment of creativity, connection, and inspiration. We look forward to more such enriching experiences in the future.
