Mediavision shares 2024 statistics for some of the most important European production companies

Mediavision has recently made public the data on how some of Europe’s largest TV production firms performed during the year 2024. Since the first quarter of 2025 is drawing to a close, many media companies have released their 2024 financial results. The results show that, despite challenging market conditions still influenced by the 2023 US actors strikes and a subdued demand for content, several companies have managed to grow or at least remain stable.

French production and distribution company Banijay Group, active in content production, distribution, and live experiences, reported a modest revenue increase of 0.5%, reaching €3,348 million in 2024. This growth was achieved despite a difficult industry environment, with a particularly strong fourth quarter driven by major scripted series. CEO François Riahi commented: “Even in a challenging global content production market context, we continued to see strong demand – especially from streaming platforms.”

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, recorded sales of £1.8 billion (€2.16 billion) for the period from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, compared to £2.1 billion (€2.5 billion) in the previous fiscal year. The decline is mostly due to tough market conditions, a slowdown in commissioning and advertising, aggravated by the loss of revenue boosts from previous multi-year partnerships. Nevertheless, the company highlighted its diversified global operations, robust content pipeline, and strong partnerships with major brands such as Disney, along with solid performance from UKTV and its consumer products division.

Fremantle, owned by RTL Group and operating in 27 countries, remained one of the world’s largest creators and distributors of both scripted and unscripted content. Its revenue held steady at €2,254 million in 2024, a slight dip from €2,266 million in 2023. However, RTL reported an 8% organic revenue decline, primarily due to the lingering effects of the US industry strikes and cautious spending by streaming services and ad-funded broadcasters.

ITV Studios experienced a 6% fall in total revenue, ending at £2.038 billion (€2.446 billion), which was in line with its guidance. Similar to what happened to RTL Group, the British company attributed this decline to the ongoing impact of the 2023 US strikes as well as reduced demand from free-to-air broadcasters, and shifts in the timing of content deliveries compared to the previous year, with a 5% fall in organic revenue.
