Some facts about Baiona and chocolate
Around the 16th century, lots of Jewish families from Spain and Portugal move to Baiona, escaping Inquisition. Some of them were wealthy merchants whose business was American cocoa beans. They brought their knowledge on how to make chocolate with them.
Slowly but steadily, Baiona became the most important chocolatier town in France, and in the 19th century it was officially nicknamed “The Capital of Chocolate”. In 1856 there were more than 30 chocolate plantes, something incredible in such a tiny village. In 1870, 130 chocolate artisans were working in Baiona, this is, more than there were in Switzerland.
Nowadays, the artisan chocolate of Baiona is still one of the best in the world, both in quality and - especially - in taste.
