Ares was the Greek god of war. He is one of the Twelve Olympians, and the son of Zeus and Hera. He often represents the physical or violent and untamed aspect of war. Ares embodied the physical valor necessary for success in war, he was a dangerous force, "overwhelming, insatiable in battle, destructive, and man-slaughtering." Fear and Terror were yoked to his battle chariot.

ALCAMENES (430-370 BC): Ares, called "Mars Borghèse" (1st or 2nd AC, Italy). Ares is a marble statue, a Roman copy of a lost Greek original, depicting a naked and helmeted young man, probably the god Ares. The type is usually attributed to the Greek sculptor Alcamenes.
