The Tale of Jane Eyre - Full Version
A downloadable Visual Novel for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Full Version Out Now!
You arrive at Thornfield Manor tired, bruised and anxious. Your aloof employer has described very little in her letters about the job itself, and all you are sure of is that you are to be the governess of her young son.
This is the first time you have ever been on your own. Your tortured past haunts your every step, but you refuse to cower in the face of uncertainty. Headstrong and determined, you face your fate...
... no matter the cost...
Alice has seen a decade of secrets pass through the doors of Thornfield Hall. She will be your confidant, your guiding light, and the keeper of your hope as the long Winter drags on. But can you trust her...?
Although the rest of the staff keeps their distance, you are not afraid of the darkness in your young student's eyes. You have been given an impossible task, and have chosen to lead with kindness. But will that be enough...?
He is fearsome, changeful, proud and cold. But then... why do you feel so much warmth when he stand close to you? Why must you tear yourself away from him every time you meet? Why, at his lowest moments, does he always reach for you?
This demo was made for the Otome Jam 2025!

Thank you so much for being here!
This is my very first visual novel, my very first time using renpy, my very first time using procreate, and my very first time participating in a jam! I really hope you enjoy the story we have crafted and forgive any hiccups!
Please send any bugs to bunnidewabbit@gmail.com and I'll get right on a fix as soon as I can! I am not stopping development, just submitting my project before the jam ends, so I WILL be releasing the full version soon.

To be honest I never actually read the Jane Eyre novel and only heard about it through references so I can't speak from that perspective. What I can say though is that I love what I played! The art style is fitting, the writing style is poetic and flowy, the music adds a nice melancholic touch to the gothic story, Jane and Mr. Rochester's banter is amusing, William is adorable, and Mrs. Fairfax is just lovely! I hope that there will be more updates in the future because I would love to play the full game! Maybe I should try the novel at some point.
Also, I wanted to point out I still had to move the game file when I downloaded through the itch app just like I pegged Satan suggested.
First off: So sorry you had to finagle the windows version! I'm on the case!
BUT
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your kind words!!!!!! Y'all are so kind and I can't WAIT to finish this for you to enjoy!!!!
hi! i kinda "solved" the issue with the windows version not working: you simply have to rearrange the files like that:
basically - move the exe file in with the others, delete the ds store and you're good to go, the game opens that way for me :)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
My hero 😠I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this I’m so grateful for you!!!!!
(A sentence I could never expect typing:) Thank you so much I pegged Satan!!!!
no problem! ;D
Ah! Yeah, I tried moving the exe, which didn't work, but I didn't know to delete the ds store!
I’ve been meaning to get with a friend in person and have them show me how to make my actual build a bit better! It looks like I did some things I didn’t need to do 😅 I’m getting married on Saturday, but as soon as I’m back from the honeymoon I’m back to work on finishing up the last of the story and making some improvements!
Oh my goodness, you must be so busy, lol! Congratulations and have a wonderful time!
And, as you're finishing up and checking things over, if you happen to need a beta reader, let me know. :)
Hello! Not sure how messaging works here but, if you happen to get this, I'm finally done with the whole thing and was wondering if I could take you up on beta testing? If not that's TOTALLY fine. Just checking!
Sure, no problem! I don't think itch has pm, so here's my email:
rachel_dibec@hotmail.com
I think pasting the script into a google doc would be easiest (I've edited that way before), and you can email me the link, making sure to allow Suggest Changes. :)
Sorry, the Windows version wouldn't open for me. It did look packaged a little differently from usual Renpy games, so maybe check that?
Jane Eyre is a great book, btw, and I'm curious to see your retelling!
oh nooooooo! I went through so much drama trying to figure out the windows version since I’m on Mac 😅. I’m going to ask around and try to get it sorted. I would love a fellow Jane Eyre fan to be able to take a look! Thank you for your interest!!!!
Ah, I feel your pain. I use mainly Linux, but Windows for gaming. I'm back to Linux today, and happy to report everything seems to be working fine in the Linux version of your game! So it's possible the Windows version not working was user error...😅
the premise seems so interesting! i'm excited to play this!
