“Night Potty Jazz” was conceived as an experiment and an attempt of finding fresh ways to compose and write songs. While on summer vacation in my hometown in the south, I listened to various avant-garde and experimental records (such as early Kraftwerk, Stephan Micus, Keith Jarrett’s “Spirits, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, Fred Frith and so on) and challenged myself to record a track a day without any preparation, mixing instruments and vocals with all kinds of sounding objects (like wind chimes, wine glasses, bottles and vacuum flasks) and electronic treatments. To dabble in spontaneity, intuition and overall outside-the-box thinking and try to musically communicate states and feelings in ways I haven’t really tried before. There was some kind of hope of regaining a childlike joy in toying, engaging in a game with music, reliving the excitement that comes with it. Tracks were later enhanced with overdubs and new mixes, though without losing their original nature. The results were at times quite wild (“Rub Dub Dub”, “Doberman…”, “Dog City…”), textural (“Weather Station”, “Absinthe”) or just plain weird. But in the end, I think there is value in just letting them be. This album is essentially a (deliberately) patchwork-like collection of these recordings.
A big and warm thank you goes to the musicians who contributed their performances, and to dear people who brought a lot of inspiration.
