In Greek mythology, Triton is a merman sea god, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. He is often depicted with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a fish or dolphin. Triton serves as his father's messenger and is most famously associated with his conch-shell trumpet, which he blows to calm or stir the waves of the sea. He lived with his parents in a golden palace beneath the ocean and, over time, "Triton" also became a generic term for mermen in general.
