Terry was born in Sunderland, England, in 1946 and now lives in County Durham, in the North-east of England.

Terry's father (Billy) was a butcher in Hendon, Sunderland, and his mother (Freda) was the manageress of a clothing shop. He worked many years in his father's butcher shop as a boy. It was better than school where he was beaten, bullied and abused by his loathsome teachers.

Terry began his career as a professional actor in 1972 when he joined Theatre Powys in Mid-Wales. As an actor with Theatre Powys Terry began writing scripts for some of the shows. One of the most successful was a children's show called "The Custard Kid". The "Custard Kid" tour ended but Terry didn't want to lose the exciting tale so he turned it into a children's novel, published by A & C Black.

He has also worked as a theatre-director, museum manager, drama teacher, television presenter. He has written and acted for television since 1974 and scripted and appearing in British movies.

In 48 years as an author his writing has included fiction and popular non-fiction for children and adults. He has published 354 books in 45 languages and sold over 38 million copies.

In 2009 CBBC Television launched a major television series of his Horrible Histories which has gone on to win several Children's BAFTA awards. In February 2011 the TV series won a British Comedy Award for best sketch show - the first children's show ever to win a Comedy Award. The same month Terry Deary became the 10th most-borrowed author in British libraries.

A series of theatre plays, 'Horrible Histories', have been created in collaboration with Birmingham Stage Company touring the UK, Australia, the Middle East and Far East.

Terry's adult non-fiction title 'A history of Britain in Ten Enemies' (Penguin-Transworld) appeared in 2024 and his first adult murder-mystery 'Actually I'm a murderer' (Constable & Robinson) in 2025.

    Not a single wasted word

I know Terry Deary made his name with his Horrible Histories series but I must confess I haven’t read any of them. However, his murder mysteries for adults demonstrate that he is a first-class writer. Actually, I'm a Corpse is the second, following on from Actually, I'm a Murderer, with the same three main characters reprising their roles: Tony Davies (second-rate actor with an unfortunate knack of being associated with murder victims); John Brown (assassin); and Aline James (police officer).

I was so sad when I finished Actually, I'm a Murderer because I thought there was no chance of a sequel. When I saw Actually, I'm a Corpse, I confess to squealing with delight – and I wasn’t disappointed. This book is so good in so many ways: the characters are highly believable, with John Brown touchingly showing a very human aspect. Tony is his usual clumsy self; and Aline is driven by her sense of justice. Deary is like one of those skilled people who set several plates spinning; keep them spinning for a while; then swiftly grab them, one after the other. He is a master at retaining our interest in all the plot strands: Tony’s new acting company; Aline’s new role as a sergeant; John’s mother fading in a care home; a body on a train; a bomb killing three people. Then, quickly, all the strands are brought together and it’s over, leaving the audience impressed and applauding.

The dialogue is crisp and tight, without a single wasted word; and so perfectly 1970s, with the casual but endemic sexism in the police force. The plot moves forward at a cracking pace. There is humour, with one nod to the Horrible Histories series. The book was one long orgy of delight for me – I do hope there will be another book in the series.

    Fun second instalment

This 2nd instalment in the Actually I’m a Murderer series works perfectly well as a standalone novel, although I’m sure that character development is more obvious if you have read the first in the series (unlike me).

The narrative is provided via three protagonists: John Brown, an assassin for hire; woman police officer, Aline James and itinerant musician-come-actor-come-author, Tony Davis.

As you would expect from the author of the Horrible Histories series, there is lots of humour as well as an enjoyment of the period setting. Despite dealing with murder, terrorism and sectarianism this book falls easily within the cozy crime genre. A fun and enjoyable read.

    A Good Sequel

Thanks you to the publisher for an advance review copy of this book. This is my honest review.

I was very excited when Terry Deary, author of Horrible Histories, moved into crime fiction last year with Actually, I'm a Murderer, and now he's back with an equally good sequel.

As before, the plot is mainly based in the early 1970s. We continue to follow Tony, the struggling actor who has a habit of attracting dead bodies, Aline, the policewoman dealing with the sexism of the 1970s but beginning to progress through the ranks, and John Brown, professional assassin who we learn a little more about. Each chapter is told from alternating viewpoints, giving different perspectives on events.

The story moves quickly, and this book is really great fun to read. There is plenty of comedy, and it never gets too dark or grisly. The unlikely trio gradually piece together what's going on, and there is plenty to keep the reader guessing. I really enjoyed it, and highly recommend it if you don't want something too serious!

The story can be read fine as a standalone, but it does contain a few spoilers from the plot of the first book, so if you are planning to read both (and you should) then read that one first.

*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book*

A year ago, a group of strangers on a train discovered that one of them was a murderer - and as a train pulls into Sunderland station once more, aspiring actor Tony Davies does not expect to be embroiled in another murder case. As he slips past the ticket inspector, a body is found on the train he has just left - and all that stands between him and a lengthy prison sentence is the police officer who he helped the previous year - newly-promoted Woman Detective Sergeant Aline James. Can the unlikely pair once again solve a murder, or will Tony's tour be cut short? And with paid assassin John Brown back on the scene, will more bodies drop?

I enjoyed the first book in this series and I think this book is much better - now the characters are a bit more settled, the book flows much better and I think it's a pacier story anyway. 5*.

Fantastic! A bit cosy crime and more than a little bit twee but with a great sense of humour and a biting wit. I loved the main characters, quirks and all. The astute observations of human character and nature was sublime and made me smile quite a lot! I’d love to run into them in true life and was fully invested and believed them to be real.

The storyline was pacy and ingenious and kept me on my toes, without my having to concentrate too much. The setting was both slightly historical (just before my time to be fair) and in a backdrop very familiar to me, Sunderland, so I appreciated and enjoyed all the local references.

I hadn’t read the previous book in the series but didn’t suffer for this, I’m definitely going to go back and read it now, however, as I can’t wait to read more. A definite recommend from me.

We follow Tony Davies, Aline James and John Brown after a body is found in a train in Sunderland. The humour is strong in this book as we observe each participants point of view. It's laugh out loud and the characters are infectious. There is also a great feeling of nostalgia with a seventies setting, perfect for us older people who remember the time. A thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining book.

With thanks to the author, and Little Brown Books for the opportunity to read this book.

A bomb goes off in a train station killing 3 people. A train pulls into Sunderland station with a dead body on board.

A theatre producer is found murdered in his office. Are the cases linked? Woman Police Sergeant Aline James thinks so and with the help and hindrance of assassin John Brown and actor Tony Davies, she aims to solve the mystery before Scotland Yard stick their size 9s in.

The trouble is other factors are at play and all of them have to be navigated.

A fun read just like the previous book Actually, I'm a murderer, where we met these characters.

The second book in the series, but the first one I have read. In fact, this is the first Terry Deary novel I have read and I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was. The book is well written and has a lovely pace that makes it so easy to read. The characters, the mystery and the humour make this a very fun read.
