"The one downside to this novella is that it’s over too soon; thankfully sequels will follow.”— Kirkus Reviews
Featured in Kirkus Reviews Magazine

The ultimate summer binge read! Book 2 arrives July 16, and Book 3 arrives September 15. Pre-order the sequels now.

At thirteen, Orion Casey has stopped singing—and it’s not because she stopped loving it. After the girls that everyone else follows start talking
about her instead of to her, she’s finished performing for anyone.

Then the messages start.

Anonymous. Encouraging. A little too perfectly timed.

Someone’s been watching her—really paying attention—and part of Orion can’t help hoping it’s the one person she wishes would notice her back. The texts give her confidence she didn’t know she had—enough to discover songwriting and a new way back to her music.

But as friendships shift and secrets surface, Orion begins to wonder: when your sense of self keeps changing based on who’s watching, how do you figure out who you really are?

Best Friends is a contemporary, fast-paced middle-grade novel filled with music, mystery, and real-life middle school drama. Featuring original songs readers can listen to, this emotionally honest story blends friendship struggles, social tension, and self-discovery into a quick, engaging read perfect for today’s tweens.

Ideal for readers who love character-driven stories about courage, creativity, and daring to find their own voice.

From the Author

When I was Orion's age, I loved music. I sang all the time, finding the harmony parts in every song. I took piano lessons. I played the flute.

And then, slowly, I started to quiet myself. Hanging out with the "cool" kids became the goal, and in that world, you
listened to music; you didn't make it. You didn't stand out; you blended.

Somewhere along the way, I began to believe that the things I loved weren't the things you were supposed to choose.

Best Friends and The Orion Sessions came from going back to that moment and asking: What happens when, little by little, you stop doing what you love?  And what happens when you finally realize you've been keeping all that passion inside?

Orion's story is about friendship, figuring out how to stay true to yourself, and the quiet ways we lose parts of ourselves—and how we find our way back.

I hope this story reminds you that you don't have to disappear to belong—and that the things you love might matter more than you think. These are the kinds of conversations I hope readers will carry with them long after the last page.

Cheryl DaVeiga is an award-winning author and songwriter whose work blends music, humor, and heart. Recognized by ASCAP for her songwriting and honored by the Eric Hoffer Book Awards, Mom’s Choice Awards (Gold), Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, and Literary Titan, Cheryl has written seven beloved children’s picture books filled with rhythm, imagination, and sing-along joy.

Cheryl’s middle-grade series, The Orion Sessions, explores friendship, identity, and growing up in the real world. Each book weaves original songs into the narrative, bringing the main character, Orion's, emotional journey to life both on and off the page.

The series grew from a deeply personal place. After building a successful career in accounting and becoming a partner at a national firm, Cheryl eventually found her way back to the music she had set aside—and to the voice she once tucked away to fit in. The Orion Sessions is the series she wishes she’d had at twelve: stories about friendship, mistakes, courage, and learning to sing—and live—for yourself.

Cheryl lives in Tucson with her partner, Doug, and spends summers in New Jersey. She continues to write, sing, and create stories that remind young readers their voices matter.
