Product description

Product Description

Paul Greengrass directs this controversial drama, following the last moments of the passengers on United Flight 93 when it was hijacked by terrorists on the 11th of September, 2001. In mid-air, some of the passengers start hearing reports of other planes that have crashed into the World Trade Centre in New York. Realising that their plane has also been hijacked, the passengers decide to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to stop it reaching the target, potentially saving thousands of lives.

Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the most shocking events in modern American history gets a skilled and respectful treatment in United 93. The movie begins by following the four terrorists who hijacked the plane that never reached its target on 9/11/2001, tracking them as they enter the airport and wait for their flight, surrounded by the people who will die from their actions. From there, it cuts to and fro among air traffic controllers and the military as, gradually, it becomes clear that planes are being hijacked and crashed into buildings. As the focus turns to the captive United Flight 93, the passengers discover, due to cell phone connections with family, that they're on a suicide mission and--almost paralyzed by stress and anxiety--decide to fight back. Most movies create tension by implying what might happen, but with United 93 the audience knows exactly what happened: Every person on that plane died. As a result, the movie is more relentlessly gut-wrenching than suspenseful (though the dawning realisation of the air traffic controllers has an effective creeping dread). But writer/director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) manages to keep the scale of the events human; there are no glamourous heroics, only terrifying confusion and desperate, hopeless bravery. One can only hope the movie brings some peace to the families of the passengers, as United 93 is the cinematic equivalent of a war memorial, commemorating lives lost in a moment of horrible, harrowing conflict. --Bret Fetzer

    Terrific filmmaking

I have to say that this film has far exceeded my expectations. The docudrama style is thankfully unsensational and believable. It was absolutely the correct direction to take and Paul Greengrass should and has been saluted for that. It would have seemed disrespectful in the extreme to have made this into some sort of bombastic, jingoistic popcorn fodder but what we are presented with here is a muted, mature, faithful legacy to those on board that doomed flight. I find it unbelievable reading comments saying the film is boring because this is about showing us the reality as far as we know it of what happened, about being a tribute to those who refused to be victims and whose spirit to fight back took over and about posing the difficult questions as to how this was able to happen. I'm sure entertainment never entered into it.

Besides, I was on an emotional rollercoaster from the very start. Watching the mundane actions of the flight crew and passengers as they board and prepare for take off unaware of what lies ahead, watching the confusion and chaos of those in the control rooms, seeing the nervous shiftiness of the four unassuming hijackers, hearing the verbatim final messages to loved ones and the overwhelming final mutiny were all so gripping, tense and moving. Scenes throughout were so well executed with the editing deserving special mention, especially the frantic scenes on the ground between the military command room, control centres and airport towers, you get a real sense of the chaos and the bewilderment as reality dawns on those watching it all unfold.

Another wise decision Greengrass took was to only make a nod to the other three hijacked flights, rather than attempt to recreate any scenes on board those planes. We only hear about them as an off trajectory flight number or see them as a moving dot on a control screen. When there is suddenly no response from that flight or worse, it simply disappears from the control screen, we can only imagine what the situation is like aboard that plane. We know what has happened and there is no need for confirmation.

There is so much more that can be said but other reviews have already sung such praises. That the film won such favour with the relatives of those on board gives the film another level of added worth. It was nice to hear some of them talk about the film as being a cathartic experience and that they felt a little peace afterwards. That's a real testament to United 93's noble intentions and perfect execution. It is a terrific piece of cinema.

I had to replace my old dvd of this, bought elsewhere. This movie is part of my essential dvd collection. So it had to play perfectly, which it did. Packaged well and prompt delivery, reasonable price. The devastating story of 9/11 is told during the events within flight United 93. Paul Greengrass , Director, is a man of immense humanity.

An extremely moving and effective depiction of the events leading up to the crash of Flight 93 that was hijacked on September 11, 2001.

I highly credit this film for how it prioritizes authenticity to avoid making a spectacle of what happened, thus allowing it to detail historical accuracy and human emotion without seeming exaggerated. There is a relentless feel of terror and suspense in spite of the the tragic outcome of the event having been universally known prior to the film being made.

The reveal of different perspectives - ranging from the passengers, crew and hijackers on the flight to air traffic control on the ground adds to the emotional layering of the film. In my opinion, the film succeeds in presenting the passengers honourably, whilst simultaneously drawing attention to the terrifying nature of their circumstances.

A highly recommended DVD - the film itself has respectable acting/directing as well as a fitting score by composer John Powell, plus the special features include a selection of interviews with the families of the actual Flight 93 passengers, who speak out on the reality of their personal losses caused by the tragedy and share their own views of the Paul Greengrass film 'United 93'.

For those of us who watched 9/11 take place through rolling news coverage, there's an impossible to avoid sick feeling in your gut during the opening hour or so. The moment the 2nd plane hits, the Pentagon attack, all play out much like they did in reality - with a mixture of shock, fear and confusion.

The scenes that take place on United 93 are respectfully done and whilst there's certainly no happy ending to be had, it was a story worth telling. I particularly appreciated that there was no gung-ho-ism, no super-patriotic message to be hammered home. The passengers of United 93 are shown as humans in a terrible situation, and react to it as such. May such a day never be repeated.

    United 93

'United 93' is the powerful and moving look at the events on September 11th 2001. It focuses on the air traffic control centres that had to deal with the hijacked planes, the military response, as well as the events on flight United 93. I found this film moved very quickly and I was engrossed throughout. You get a real sense of the panic and confusion on that day and it goes some way to showing how difficult it must have been to deal with as it occurred. I was concerned this film would be pro American and biased, but it didn't seem to excessive in that respect and it gave the film all the more impact because of that. I found myself extremely choked up when the passengers on the flight were ringing relatives to say goodbye and couldn't even begin to imagine having to do something like that. The ending is full of drama and very powerful and although we have no way of truly knowing every event on that flight, this goes some way to portraying the fears and events that may have occurred. The film is excellently directed, the soundtrack works perfectly to move you and the acting is pretty good as well. Highly recommended indeed.

Such a terrible thing happened on this day as we know, but this film really shows the sheer bravery of the people of flight 93 in trying to take back the aircraft from the hijackers!

The film really puts you in the picture as to what the passengers must have been going through on that flight, Its very easy to watch this or read about it and think you would have done it differently but the good thing about this film is it shows the viewers just how difficult it was in reality, with not initially knowing the pilots had been killed and then how they would be able to over power one of the hijackers wearing a suicide belt.

It is a very tense and moving film, one of which i would highly recommend to watch.

I would also like to add that i believe this film is a nice dedication not only to the passengers and flight crew of the flight 93 but to the Air traffic controllers, emergency services, military, civilians and everyone else involved in this tragic event. Together they did everything they could to take their city back and pull together as one and help all those who were injured or who had lost friends or family in the dreadful events that took place on this ever remembered day.

    God bless them all.

    Terrifying

I remember exactly where I was on September 11th 2001, as I'm sure most people do.

It was a normal work day until we heard the news of the Trade Centre attack. After we heard the news, nothing was normal about the day anymore.

For all of the passengers on these hi-jacked planes, the day would have started normally for them too, but the terror they must have felt upon realising the situation they were in would have been a thousand times worse than the terror that my colleagues and I felt that day.

Other than news coverage of that awful day, this is the first thing I have watched about this attack. I heard about the WTC and the Pentagon attacks, but that was as much as I knew. And after reading other's reviews, apparently I'm the only person who did not know about United 93. I only love horror when it's not real.

This film starts building the tension right from the beginning and it continues to build until the terrifying ending. Not knowing about this particular hi-jacked flight, I didn't know how it was going to end. My heart dropped into my stomach and I'm sure it's going to stay there for some time.

I would like to think that if I was in the same situation, I would have been heroic and stepped up with the rest of them to try to get back control of the plane, but if I'm completely honest, I probably would have just hidden myself on the floor, hoping for a better outcome. Respect has to be given to the passengers that at least tried to do something.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims.

I'm not going to say "I enjoyed this film" as "enjoyed" is completely the wrong word, but I was gripped from start to finish and well into the credits. I'm the kind of person that moves immediately onto the next film as soon as the credits start to roll.
