Yeah .. Same problem with me. I too need to put up the server for robots.

You may not have the required development packages installed.

Be sure to have something similar to:
libexpat-dev

Maybe add the following to CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS
-lexpat

Correction: I meant CXXFLAGS, not CPPFLAGS in previous posts.

Enclosed is my working TORCS 1.3.6 install directory listing.
Does Ubuntu only permit library '*.so'  in /lib/ directories?
Please compare the enclosed local/lib/torcs with your directory.

How does this work with TORCS 1.3.6 (works on CentOS)
(Note './configure --prefix=/home/USER/local')

./configure --prefix=/home/USER/local CFLAGS="-march=native -O3" CPPFLAGS="-march=native -O3" LDFLAGS="-Wl,--no-add-needed,--strip-all"
make
make install
make datainstall

Old versions may need (libm) CFLAGS="-march=native -O3 -lm"

Hi all

As you might have read in the 1.3.6 changelog, it is now again possible 
to generate Documentation out of TORCS. Post 1.3.6 I added an 
architecture overview, you can download the package containing it here:
