I would have expected the GeForce4MX to be not much slower, because the 6200 might just have a 64 bit local memory bus and around 400MHz clock, the AGP version, it very depends on the actual card you have bought (correct?). So what you have in the end on the AGP version is more local memory, more texture units if you use the fixed pipeline and shader support. > Result: > 1)The performance of the new card is more than three times the old one, > according to the Blender benchmark. This is confirmed by the performance of That does tell nothing about other applications, be careful with that. > Doom III, which now runs quite well (differently from before) Here as well, IIRC the MX had just 2 texture units (right?), so perhaps it required multi pass rendering and texture loading over AGP because of GPU local memory shortage, so this might have caused that. TORCS uses just 2 units if just two are available, so you will recognize not much (at least not on NVidia cards). > 2)Torcs speed does not change. What is strange is that - with the new card > just as the old one - it does not change changing the resolution or color > depth; another strange thing is that the speed is low even in scenes where a > few detail is present. Because we do not use yet display lists nor vertex buffer objects (VBO) the whole geometry is pumped up to the graphics card for each frame, so the main factors are currently: - Raw CPU/main memory access time (because this has streaming characteristics cache does not help much here, terrible, could be improved by ~30% with SSE prefetch function). - GPU bus transfer rate (AGP, PCI express), we could use display lists or VBO's to avoid that. - Enough memory for textures (64 MB should be fine), otherwise the textures need to be pumped over the bus as well (very nice to see with a GeForce 1 or 2 with 32 MB RAM, with x cars it runs very nice, and with x+1 it breaks down, where x depends on the cars and track). > In order to understand the cause of this low performance I made the > following experiment. And now... here are the numbers: from > 100 to 200 frames per second! The rendering was very very fast; I could move > on the track at a very high speed without any problem. Hmm, what happened here very depends on the rendering "options", e.g. how the lighting is set up and if the track is put into a display list. But a more killing factor might be the multi texturing support in TORCS which is implemented sub optimal, it multiplies the texture coordinate/geometry count by 4 (!!!, because of its implementation), which needs to be fetched from memory and sent over the bus, so it is perfectly reasonable to have a default 4 times penalty (cannot remember this exactly). This could be avoided by using glTexgen instead of concrete texture coordinates (I asked a very long time ago about why this has not been used on the list, but got no answer, perhaps on earlier cards the support of glTexgen sucked or happened on the CPU, so it did not help or even hurt). What is very important as well is how the viewer showed the transparency, in old measurements some years ago on my GF2 this made quite a big difference. > I'm really confused. Can someone tell me why does this happen? That's hard to tell exactly without a 6200 here, but I think the actual graphics could be easily 2.5 to 6 times faster, even with nice effects applied (e.g. dot3 bump mapping, I did not measure yet the performance of GLSL shaders, they could be slower). I will start working on that after networking is done (mid 2007 I hope). Fist of all: Hello. And second: Torcs 1,2.4, installed from sources Suse linux 10.0 Pentium IV 2.4GHz 512M RAM Graphic card: GeForce 6200 256M NVidia driver From some weeks on I'm developing a new track. Unfortunately, I've notice= d that adding a bit more detail than a few geometric primitives led to a gr= eat decrease in the frame rate achieved, so that it rapidly went beyond 20fps= . Thinking that the problem resided in the old graphic card (GeForce4 MX 44= 0), I've changed it with a GeForce6200. Result: 1)The performance of the new card is more than three times the old one, according to the Blender benchmark. This is confirmed by the performance= of Doom III, which now runs quite well (differently from before)=20 2)Torcs speed does not change. What is strange is that - with the new car= d just as the old one - it does not change changing the resolution or color depth; another strange thing is that the speed is low even in scenes wher= e a few detail is present. In order to understand the cause of this low performance I made the following experiment. I've modified the tux example in the plib package, loading my track in place of the tux, and catching some keyboard events t= o move fastly around the track. I've had to remove the sgFlatten and sgStripify, which blocked the program. Also, following an example on the net, I added a fps test in the code. And now... here are the numbers: fro= m 100 to 200 frames per second! The rendering was very very fast; I could m= ove on the track at a very high speed without any problem. I'm really confused. Can someone tell me why does this happen?=20 Thank you! =20 =20 -- Email.it, the professional e-mail, gratis per te: http://www.email.it/f =20 Sponsor: Le speciali Offerte di Benvenuto di Cassine di Pietra: scopra il gusto ed i vantaggi delle tradizioni contadine Clicca qui: http://adv.email.it/cgi-bin/foclick.cgi?mid=3D3924&d=3D20060= 221 |

What Rigid Body Engines are very good for is the modelling of rigid bodie= s and various connections ("joints") between them. I do not know if at the beginning of TORCS (in 1997) any free rigid body = engine was available, so it was a reasonable choice to implement everything from= scratch. You can try as well texture compression (I guess this option should be available with your chip). - Fix (eventually): Get and install the latest OpenGL driver for your Unichrome. Please report if and how you could solve the problem. Bye, Bernhard. -- Visit my homepage http://www.berniw.org Official TORCS racing: The TORCS Racing Board, http://www.berniw.org/trb |

I have been getting some pit warnings which I did not acknowledge. This would explain most of the problem. However, I don't remember getting the warning ever time, I must have missed it when it was displayed. A message indicating the reason for being removed from the race would be a nice addition. It could be displayed when the car is taken out of the race or shown in the race summary. Thanks again for responding. Craig |

Hi, I tried to play the game but the screen was black... I can hear the sound of engine and i saw dust from the tires when the car start to move. I also can see some information in the screen like time, map, position, speed and etc. I've already tried to disable the sound and it doesn't work I've tried to change the cameras, all i could see was the position or distance of the dust changing I run the binary installer package for windows that i got in the site torcs.souceforge.net I think torcs version is the latest 1.2.4 I use a windows xp with sp2 My computer is an AMD Sempron 2400+ (~1.7GHz) with 256MB RAM DDR 333MHz My video graphic card is a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP it is integrated with the motherboard and share the RAM memory I setup the video card with 32MB I wish you could help, i would enjoy very much to play this game! Eric Espié might answer to the following : Interested in the topic of rigid body simulation, I asked Eric some times ago why Torcs didn't use a Rigid body physics library instead of hard-coded classes (clutch, transmission, tires, etc...) in Torcs, and he told me about an open source library that was supposed to be interesting for Torcs even if finally that solution were not chosen, but I cannot remember which one. Could someone recommend me a good (stable and fast !) and open source rigid body physics library ? What is being simulated by this event? You have most probably been violating the rules and you have to do a pass-through or stop-and-go penalty. If you don't perform the required action within 3 rounds, your car is taken out of the race. This perplexed me as well a few times. I am 90% sure this is because of a rules violation because its easy to take the first turn on CG3 too tightly, which is actually part of the pit lane, thus breaking the 'pit-entry' rule. -- Christos Dimitrakakis Homepage: http://www.idiap.ch/~dimitrak/main.html Music: http://olethros.dmusic.com |

Hi Craig > Sometimes during a race, the car will shift into neutral, the engine is > killed and the car is steered off the race track. This occurs at pro Sounds strange to me, to be honest. What does exactly happen when you do what and where, and with which version/configuration? The only cases where a car is taken out of the race without damage < 10000 are (or better should be): - out of fuel and speed below a certain threshold. - for robots only: if a lap takes very long TORCS assumes there is something wrong with the bot and removes the car as well. - perhaps if you do not clear penalties in time, but I connot remember this. Sometimes during a race, the car will shift into neutral, the engine is killed and the car is steered off the race track. This occurs at pro level with damage points less than 3500. No additional damage points are shown on the race summary. This occurs most frequently at CG Track 3. What is being simulated by this event? Craig |
