Okay new to group, happy to be shouted at if required
I actually have torcs up and running using the rpms from
ftp://rpmfind.rediris.es/sites/carroll.cac.psu.edu/mandrakelinux/official/10.0/contrib/i586/
however, I can only partiticpate in the Quick Race on the default track (CG
track 3?)
I have the following rpms installed
torcs-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-data-1.2.2-1mdk.noarch.rpm
torcs-data-cars-extra-1.2.2-1mdk.noarch.rpm
torcs-robots-astigot-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-robots-base-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-robots-berniw-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-robots-billy-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-robots-bt-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
torcs-robots-K1999-1.2.2-2mdk.i586.rpm
I did get to be able to do any of them, well practice at least, and select the
users but then due to `user error` I had to reinstall my system
the only ooutput I get is
[chapmanc@homehost raceman]$ /usr/games/torcs
Visual Properties Report
------------------------
z-buffer depth: 24
alpha channel : enabled
antialiasing : enabled
WARNING: ssgLoadTexture: Cannot determine file type for './(null)'

GfParmCheckHandle: parameter "Rear Left Suspension/packers" out of bounds: min:0
max:0.01 val:0.02 in ("Tanhoj" - "drivers/tanhoj/tracksdata/car_g-track-3.xml")
I presume the `Cannot determine file type for './(null)'` is the real error
When I try to change the track it seg faults with the following error
[chapmanc@homehost chapmanc]$ /usr/games/torcs
Visual Properties Report
------------------------
z-buffer depth: 24
alpha channel : enabled
antialiasing : enabled
/usr/games/torcs: line 54: 11827 Segmentation fault $LIBDIR/torcs-bin -l
$LOCAL_CONF -L $LIBDIR -D $DATADIR $*
there is no core file from that crash
other than the output from uname (Linux homehost.dixiest.net 2.6.3-14mdk #1 Fri
Jun 18 01:22:49 MDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux) I have no other errors
any ideas where to start looking

Hi Zachary > Are there any FAQs, or HOW-TOs on creating models in TORCS? Not real HOW-TOs. But there are some mailing in this list about the subject. Here a snippet of a mail from Eric Espié: " basically, the 3D models are done with AC3D, the origin of the model should be at the middle of the car in both X and Y and at the bottom of the car in Z (Z is up) the units are in meter. The normals, multitextures and strip calculations are done by the accc tool associated with the stripe <http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~stripe> program (the accc pass is optional but nice). The textures are in uncompressed RGB (handled very well by The Gimp and AC3D) The shadow texture how-to is explained here: <http://torcs.sourceforge.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=27> The wheel texture is done using the radial motion blur effect of The Gimp with the values (10,10) (20,20) and (40,40) for the angle and length. The physics description for the simulation is located in the associated xml file. " I posted some minutes ago another mail which lists references on how to create a track. bye, Bernhard. -- visit my homepage http://www.berniw.org |

For info I get up to 250fps (about twice what I get on the 3GHz P4 laptop under windows, and I'm pretty happy about that. Thanks again. -- David Haggett |

Yes, trying a 32-bit compile would be an alternative to using -fPIC and recompiling plib because in 32-bit mode, the AMD64 CPU has to be 100% compatible to what other CPUs of what the IA32 architecture requires. But as you already tried the 32-bit rpm(just of the older version, not the current CVS) and it can be assumed that the messed-up graphics in this rpm was an issue with the nVidia driver, running the 32-bit-compiled version could also show similar issues as with the rpm version.
