I am using VC++6.0, but on building the project the error:

       Creating library Debug/lliaw.lib and object Debug/lliaw.exp
    .\Debug\lliaw.dll
    The system cannot find the path specified.
            0 file(s) copied.
    Error executing c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.

appears. It seems to have a problem with files that aren't in the
.\lib\ directory. Is this a problem with linking due to running 6.0
on XP?

Just follow the instruction in the README exactly, then it works. Of course you
need vc++ 6.0 like stated there, otherwise you are currently on your own vs 2008
support will come with 1.4.0.

Visual C++ returns a 'build failed' result.
The Stats are 9 successful, 16 failed, 1 up-to-date, 0 skipped

Is it likely that I have done something wrong, or are there errors
in the source code?
