I doubt that this is a TORCS problem (but I may be wrong). Do you have Xinerama
enabled? There is a similar problem with the NVidia drivers, but there the
problem is in the graphics driver, not in TORCS.

The main reason was I didn't exactly know how gettext works, and this 
conversion is quite easy with the xml-tools already included in Torcs. The 
po-files are usefull, because there are some programs around to make 
translation of po-files easier.

It is a partial replacement of the gettext functions; of course gettext itself 
will also work.

Some of the translations can just be obtained out of the xml-file with 
translations (generated from the translated po). This works for all strings 
except in-game strings and strings in an xml-file.

For the translations of strings in an xml-file, I have another suggestion. For 
every string in an xml-file, an option argument besides "name" and "val" is 
allowed ("trans"). It can have three values:
* trans="no" (default): do not try to translate;
* trans="auto": add the string to the po file with a script and translate if 
with the function used for the other translations;
* trans="manual": the translation are in the xml-file itself (usefull for 
external xml-files). If the name of the <attstr/> is "foo" and the language 
is "nl", the the translation is in a new <attstr/> with name "foo_nl".

In my opinion, this method have as advantage that it is not needed to make a 
mapping between keys and translations on another place (or maybe I don't 
understand it correctly). Also, a string "TRACK_DESCRIPTION" anywhere on the 
screen should be prevented.

For the in-game translation, looking them up in an xml or po file is probably 
slow (or better: the computer has better things to do at that moment). So the 
idea was to put all translations which occur during racing in an array and 
use #define's to get the indices (maybe even generated automatically). 

The font system is an other issue. There might be a solution by using some 
kind of codepages. Loading all the unicode characters as graphics takes too 
much memory, but loading all the iso-8859-1 characters and some 
language-specific pages is possible, I think. Of course, for this to work, 
there must be a suitable font for Torcs available in unicode.

That's *exactly* what I suggested if you read my post. But with a readily  
available access to configure it if required.

Right, so everyone in the world who has to do some work in English as well  
as their native language is now a "geek" and we should make them jump  
through hoops to find out how to make use of the language option present  
in the software and make it as obscur as possible to change it. After all  
they're geeks they'll enjoy it.

For 99% of the users this is exactly what is needed.

Other way round. I guess you would be really pissed if every of the hundreds off
applications you use must be set manually to the desired language. So TORCS
should just silently adapt to the current environment. I would at most allow a
command line switch to override this or a manually edited entry in an XML for
the geeks.

irritating than a system that thinks it "knows" what I want.

If a multilanguage torcs is installed it seems a shame not be able to  
access the feature because it is preordained by some programmed preference  
sniffing. Let the user choose. May be some OS dependant language detection  
could set a default but I think the user should have access to the setting.

I think having a new menu for this is clutter as you say but it would be  
good to have a language option in one of the existing configuration pages.  
Perhaps at the same level as the graphics configuration. Likely done once  
for the users installation of torcs.

I dont immediately see the use of continent options. Surely just list the  
languages available. One list in an existing context would not clutter  
things

TORCS does currently not support internationalization. It would be a nice thing
to have, if somebody could try (or tell me if you have already experience with
this) if gnu gettext and family work as well under Windows (without cygwin
environment, I assume FreeBSD and OSX should be now problem). Or can you point
me to other portable internationalization frameworks?

If this would work we need to solve as well the font problem, because the fonts
we use now cannot have all international fonts, so it would be desirable to use
fonts of the host system. This has in turn the risk that we choose fonts unlucky
and the application looks crappy.
