Are you able to hang from a pull up bar, but not able to do a pull up (yet)?  Consider adding eccentric pull ups to your training routine.  An eccentric pull up helps build the strength necessary for a pull up; we start an eccentric pull up from the top of the pull up (chin above bar) and lower down slowly to the bottom of the pull up (with arms straight).  We can start eccentric pull up training with a bar secured in a power rack at chest height.  We use our legs to assist lowering with control only as needed.  Once we've gained strength at that height, we can raise the bar to shoulder height; this will encourage us to use less leg assistance as we perform the eccentric pull ups.
