Independent scholar Lisa Yin Zhang presents extensive new research on the life, work, and intellectual world of writer and translator Léonie Gilmour (1873–1933), Isamu Noguchi’s mother. Drawing on recently digitized archival sources, including correspondence and unpublished manuscripts, Zhang offers a portrait of the fiercely independent life of Gilmour while tracing the profound influence she had on her son.
