Yellow Bellied Sea Snake

RIBBON IN THE SAND 💙 💛 🖤⁠ All ribbon eels start off as males and are black with a yellow dorsal fin. As they grow, they turn blue and yellow, just like the photo above). Once they have grown to a certain length, they turn yellow and will develop female parts!⁠ 📸 This ribbon eel was photographed on our recent Atlantis Azores Bohol charter by guest Michael McCabe - 'We were very fortunate to see this gal out of her lair and swimming around just for us to get her picture' !!⁠ ⁠

The ribbon eel is what is known as sequentially hermaphroditic; this means that it changes genders throughout its life cycle. Within its 20 years of life, a ribbon eel starts as a juvenile and then goes from a male to a female which accounts for the size and color changes. The female stage is short-lived so footage of them is this state is more difficult to come by.

The Yellow-bellied Sea Snake has a potent venom, estimated to be roughly one-fourth as strong as that of the Beaked Sea Snake. This venom is still more toxic than the Mojave rattlesnakes and King cobras, and, for instance, more potent than the venom of any terrestrial land snake found in Costa Rica.
