Aptenodytes patagonicus, King Penguin. Large, penguin that is rarely seen away from well-known colony sites. Found in the South Atlantic and the South Indian Ocean at places such as the Kerguelen Islands, Crozet Island, Prince Edward Islands and at Macquarie Island. They mainly eat lanternfish, squid and krill. They repeatedly dive to over 100 metres, and have been recorded at depths greater than 300 metres. Breeding season requires more than a year, so birds can be seen year-round at colonies.
Newly hatched King penguin chicks (Aptenodytes patagonicus, the 2nd largest penguin species) are covered with fine brown downy feathers. They are called 'oakum boys' because their fluffy feathers resemble oakum, flax fibres drenched in pine tar, that clung to the boys who used them to caulk timbers on sailing ships. Since these feathers are not waterproof, they must stay out of the water. This one, caught by a rogue wave, is looking completely woebegotten. Gold Harbour, South Georgia Island. Taken several years ago during a tour of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, the sub-Antarctic Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
