1858-End of Humoral Medicine A popular belief during the time period was called the humorism theory. This idea was a large part of the teaching of Galen and Hippocrates and basically stated that there were four liquids or ‘humors’ in the body; blood, black bile, phlegm and yellow bile. It was believed that every disease resulted from an imbalance of the humors in your body. It was very popular until 1858 when Rudolf Virchow disproved the idea with his theories of cellular pathology.
