Hello! I'm Ms Boba, and I'm a software dev + fandom person who really 💜s the web.

Check out some of the projects I founded in the links below 👇, and help us help niche online communities take back their internet by supporting us on Patreon!

…and if you're curious about coding, the web, or just want to hang out while I build random stuff, come say hi on Twitch Mondays and Thursdays at 3PM Pacific!

Finally almost done with the learn.fujoweb.dev writers style guide, a prerequisite for hiring writers to help us help EVEN MORE hobbyists pick up advanced webdev skills.

I hope to start looking into candidates next week, in the meantime our survey is still active!⬇️

If you want to chat about this, or watch along as we build an ATProto guestbook live, come hang out with me on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/essentialrandomness

Spent some time updating our ATProto projects site with our latest work (conference talk + guestbook lexicon). Check it out here:

And IN 2 HOURS come chat with us as we continue building our new Guestbook on Twitch!

It lives!!! We can officially embed an ATProto guestbook in a web page using an iframe. Next up, we'll build up to posting, then to other ways to display guestbook submissions!

Lots of people say we need an AO3 for art, and they're right. But they usually just mean an anything goes art hosting site. But that's just AO3 the website. The OTW is an organization defends and protects fic and is ready to go to bat for it legally. What we actually an OTW for art, an organization that will lawyer up for the legal standing of art that gets labeled obscene and without artistic or literary merit. And we have that, it's the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

I mean... yes, the legal defense aspect is critical. But notably, ao3 is NOT an art hosting site. All art embedded there has to be HOSTED elsewhere, leaving all art seen on ao3 still subject to other sites' censorship. When I see these laments primarily, it's about the fact that all our former art-specific havens have become hostile to the art they used to be bastions of.

What people want is an art hosting site whose servers are protected and protectIVE of art freedom over corporate censorship.

...but what those art hosting sites need in order to exist is the legal defense capabilities that AO3 has (what anon compares to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund). As things are, you cannot have those art hosting sites. It's not a matter of corporate censorship (though obviously corporations are NOT going to go to bat for you), it's a matter of serious legal risks for anyone hosting "almost-anything-goes images", which AO3 goes around by exclusively hosting text thus lowering their legal risks. And this isn't even going into the incredible amount of moderation burden that images require!

Overall, the issue is that "AO3 for art" is not viable in the current landscape, in great part because the legal risks are just disproportionate, and there's not enough support from the larger public for those risks to be worth taking.

Despite this, some people are willing to take risks, and still face enormous hurdles. Baraag recently got ditched by their media storage provider, for example. Aethy had similar issues, and you can read them describe in their own post the struggle that trying to keep it up has been.

People who want those hosting sites should understand what they're asking whoever will provide them to take on, and what the costs and risks they face are. And they should understand that IF this ever becomes viable again, it will be because of the work done behind the scene by non-technical folks, and not because the issue is spinning up a website that can host stuff like this.

Today I'm working on being able to put our writers survey to use by writing a @fujowebdev style guide

Obligatory "I want to code... please let me code......." (This is what I need to get more time to code back, but god the suffering is real)

[Seeking Referrals]

tl;dr: I’m looking to hire a career consultant/resume writer to wrangle my wide-spanning career&projects into a coherent story that does justice to all I do. Experience with indie/alternative paths preferred!

For more context, you can check out my current “hire me” page: www.essentialrandomness.com/resume I don’t believe it does justice to who I am, what I can do, and where my expertise lie, and I’ve accepted I’m too busy to wrangle it into shape. Please boost and help me find a good match :) 🙏

New Contractor Announcement ✨

Friends, please welcome our new contractor and first-official-sysadmin, Kat 🎉

Kat is not only a long-term member of Fandom Coders, but a prolific self-hoster of fandom software, and we're SO excited to have her aid in our quest!

Over the next few months Kat will work on getting our servers in order: from backing up our data, to setting up monitoring of our resources (no more accidental 20GB log file), to much needed "service down!" alerts. She'll also help us set up infrastructure for future services!

This is Kat's first professional experience as a sysadmin, and a huge step in our mission to create opportunities for members of the fandom community!

If you'd like to join us, we're looking for writers, technical and not! Drop your contact in our form 👇⬇️👇

And if you'd like to give *your* aid to our mission of creating professional opportunities for software hobbyists (and beyond) in our community, ESPECIALLY now that being a junior in tech is so incredibly hard, support us on Patreon!

(Last thing, to get ahead of potential questions about Kat's TOS banning certain content from her sites: we talked extensively about her stance on issues dear to fandom, and we're comfortable with where she stands. Likewise, we stand by her right to choose what she's personally comfortable hosting.)

Geese, Guides, and Good Luck Cookies 🪿📔🥠... and a (paid) Call for Writers 📝💰

It's out! Check out this month's update, including: our visit to #ATmosphereConf (feat. geese yaoi 🪿), our plans for the fortune cookies revenue 🥠, news on the GitHub Guide Beta and... A 💰PAID💰 opportunity for daring—not to mention aspiring—tech writers 📝⬇️

Call for hire

This month we’re once again happy to share a paid position: come forth technical writers (and aspiring such), and let us bring you on a Now Paying Money adventure!

  • Smithing Words📝…for Money (💰): After much time, feedback, and outlining, the “Introduction to JavaScript with NPM” articles financed through our founding campaign are ready to be written! Now we’re finally looking for technical writers (fannish background appreciated) to help us inspire new, confident explorers of everything the NPM ecosystem has to offer—and yes, we (also) mean Astro. Check out some of the articles in our learning website for an example of what the final artifacts should look like, and get in touch if you’re up for the (paid) task! We require both basic computer knowledge and the willingness to run simple command line programs, but we don’t require previous experience with professional technical writing NOR pre-existing knowledge of NPM/JavaScript. Just send us some tutorials or other explainers you’ve written!
  • Smithing Videos📹…for Glory: Are you willing to wrangle video wranglers? BobaBoard’s documentation bubble is looking for a wondrous lead volunteer to coordinate our wonderful video volunteers as they turn our many, many hours of recorded web development and BobaBoard documentation into something the whole FujoVerse™ and beyond can put to good use. If you have previous experience with managing work on video, or have been part of similar work and want to build some managing experience of your own, reach out!

If any of these calls for aid sound up your alley, or if you’d like to get involved in other ways, please reach out at contacts@fujocoded.com or via DMs!

In the nick of time but... OUR NEWSLETTER IS OUT, with a paid opportunity for tech writers 💰👇👀

Check it out above ☝️, and then come on TWITCH and watch me build the 3rd part of our GuestBook Lexicon: the actual AppView (this time for real, I swear)!!
