When does the 2026 MLS season start?
The MLS 2026 regular season will begin with Opening Weekend on February 21–22, 2026, and will conclude in November 2026. Each team will play 34 regular season matches — 17 at home and 17 away. The 2026 All-Star Game will take place at Charlotte FC’s Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 29, 2026. Following the regular season, the MLS Cup Playoffs will begin in November and will culminate with the 2026 MLS Cup.
MLS will pause play for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from May 25 to July 16, giving players time to join their national teams for the tournament, which begins June 11 and is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The 2026 season will also mark the league’s final spring-to-fall schedule before MLS transitions to a global summer-to-spring calendar, with a shortened 2027 transition season leading into the first full cycle from mid-2027 through May 2028.

Major League Soccer History
Buoyed by interest in soccer following the 1994 World Cup in the United States, and filling the void left in 1984 by the defunct NASL, the inaugural season of Major League Soccer took place in 1996, with 10 teams spread across 48 states, from Los Angeles to Tampa Bay.
The league experienced huge growth, going from 10 to 24 teams in the first two decades. After the U.S.’s success in the 2002 World Cup, the league adopted international standards for play. As MLS has gotten bigger, many teams have moved to soccer-specific stadiums and with the popularity of MLS, international signings from other leagues is a common occurrence nowadays.
In 2025, a new team, San Diego FC, joined the MLS roster, bringing the total number of MLS clubs to 30. To further align with the globally familiar soccer schedule, MLS will shift to a summer-to-spring calendar beginning in 2027. MLS has also made some recent marquee signings of international players, including South Korean star forward Son Heung-min aka Sonny (LAFC), German legend Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps FC) and Argentine World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul (Inter Miami CF). MLS Preseason

MLS Cup
The 2026 MLS Cup is a single match between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions. In 2025, Inter Miami CF won their first MLS Cup by defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Inter Miami CF vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC
The 2025 MLS Cup Presented by Audi took place on December 6, 2025 with a match between Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Inter Miami CF. Inter Miami CF beat the Whitecaps, 3-1, in front of a sold-out crowd of 21,566 fans at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Whitecaps FC had originally earned the right to host the match, but it was relocated to Chase Stadium — built specifically for soccer — since Inter Miami CF’s new venue is still under construction.The Inter Miami CF have now won their first MLS Cup championship. For his two assists during the match, Lionel Messi was named the MLS Cup MVP presented by Audi.
