Let’s consider what media is and how it differs from social media. Then I’ll explain, again, why the proposed digital ID proposals are extraordinarily sinister (but doomed).

First of all, let’s consider the difference between media and social media. Let’s ask an AI bot to define the difference. This, courtesy of Gemini:

Media has historically served to inform, educate, and shape public opinion, acting as a bridge between events and the public. It establishes societal norms and holds institutions accountable. Social media differs fundamentally from traditional media by decentralizing this flow of information. It shifts the model from one-way broadcasts to interactive, two-way conversations.

Clearly it was inevitable that, with a pervasive, near-universal, free and open Internet that the balance of power would shift away from centralised, media-controlling, organisations (like the government) to individuals.

Note that in Gemini’s amalgam definition of ‘media’ it notes that it has a role to ‘shape public opinion’. And that is what it has done, and continues to do. But its influence is waning. In fact, it’s plummeting.

Even the BBC has been forced to admit the obvious.

Also, the role of the media, as per Gemini’s definition, of establishing societal norms and holding institutions accountable, is laughably absurd and elitist. But it’s a very accurate portrayal, for example, of the BBC’s positioning - as evidenced by this cringe-worthy video produced by the organisation, claiming that it is a single source of truth.

But alongside this collapsing trust (and collapsing licence fee revenue) is a growing reliance on social media for news content. But, remember, social media is not media. There is no centralised control (or shouldn’t be). Rather, people ‘get their news’ from social media by seeking out the opinions of their peers, their favourite ‘influencers’ or seeking network agreement for their own opinions (as I’m doing here, now). And, in the face of this, the traditional media (tell-sell, broadcast approach) just doesn’t cut it any more.

The BBC realised some time ago that it was never going to survive in the face of individual free thinking. That’s why few, if any, news articles on the BBC website are open for comment. But it’s also why the BBC was quickly scrambled during the fake pandemic to create an international censorship network that included all of the main social media platforms: the ironically titled “Trusted News Initiative”.

The organisation, or rather its spook handlers, realised that it was failing to control the narrative around the faked pandemic given the widespread availability of an opinion promulgation network (called social media). Therefore, it set about creating a censorship nexus.

The result, however, was widespread disaffection from the social media platforms that retained traditional media’s funding sources (advertising revenue). Customer disaffection isn’t a great business model so the social media companies rapidly rebranded after the Covid fiasco. In the case of Twitter it was ‘acquired’ by the same people and institutions that owned it before. But the rebranding included the idea of ‘freedom of speech, not freedom of reach’ to appease the automated digital advertising networks.

But after the COVID debacle the spooks are left with a dilemma. The ‘media’ island of Newspeak is getting smaller and less well funded. “News” and network anchors who were associated with the unrelenting propaganda around the “pandemic”, “climate change” and “culture wars” are slowly, but surely, being exited (often because of their arrogance, perversions or both). Just yesterday the BBC announced thousands of job cuts and vast cost savings - including the exit of Amol Rajan from the Today programme (it’s quite astonishing that the axing of just one presenter from one radio programme is highlighted in a story about huge cost-savings).

But, given this waning in the importance of media designed to ‘shape public opinion’ what’s a spook network to do?

By definition, social media companies do not publish. They provide a platform for people to publish, and advertisers to advertise and governments to shape public opinion. By attracting people (consumers, citizens, employees, PR types, commentators, journalists, politicians) to the platform they get to sound off about stuff. Or publish videos. Or photos. Or opinions. But there’s no central organisation or control of all this stuff. It just is. It’s a medium of exchange. And it attracts all sorts. Good and bad. And there are lots of competing platforms. Some platforms are effectively run by the state or technocratic super-state. Some are genuinely independent (although they tend not to last, or are bought-out).

So the only means available to governments and their spooks to re-establish control is to have total central intelligence of what’s happening on the networks. That requires each and every user to be identified. It also requires the building of vast data surveillance networks (and data centres) and also the promulgation of content from approved influencers with vast reach.

The lesson that central intelligence has learned from traditional media and is currently applying in social media is that big influencers must be seen to be mavericks who organically emerge. However, this is tricky to achieve when the ‘model’ they have been using is to migrate well known traditional media personalities (like Tucker Carlson or Russell Brand) over to the world of social media. Hence Carlson moves from Fox to Twitter. Or Piers Morgan is repositioned as a maverick ‘thinker’ and faux conspiracy theorist (look at his repositioning from vaccine peddler to sceptic). Russell Brand’s rapid adoption of Christianity is in no small part based on the observation that supposedly organically emergent social media influencers (like James Delingpole) are often Christian. This is the modus of central intelligence in the social media era…they use actors to ape crowd-created influencers.

The problem they face, however, is that people have an uncanny ability to detect wrong’uns, actors, and placed ‘talent’. Moreover, it’s often the case that anonymous accounts can achieve huge reach organically.

This explains why such efforts were made during the purging period from 2020 to around 2022. And it also explains why, starting with Australia, all members of the Five Eyes network will use the excuse of ‘child protection’ to implement control over social media platforms. Australia took the lead in 2025. Now the UK and Canada. Eventually the US states will do it too. And NZ no doubt. Slam dunk.

The only reason ‘parents’ apparently support it is because the governments make it appear so by commissioning rigged studies.

However, all of the efforts will fail, for the reasons I alluded to in my post yesterday. People will simply not agree to digital ID gate-keeping to maintain their social media accounts. Therefore, the social media platforms won’t try. As argued by MiriAF, yesterday, they’ll probably target anonymous accounts primarily, then give up. And age-policing of under-16s will come unstuck because of GDPR and, ironically, distrust of social media companies holding personal data. And the widespread use of VPNs.

In my view, it’s much more likely that the attempt to make society a digital-prison ship is about to hit a big iceberg. The circular economy that is the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’ Tech Bro companies, is teetering. So don’t let the latest spook strategy unsettle you too much. This particular good ship DigitalID is full of holes. But another one might be coming soon.

Banning the Internet

The government has failed to notice that, for many, social media IS the internet.

Jeffrey Peel

I’m not claiming that social media is all good. Social media, within seconds, undermines every government policy or pronouncement - and every politician peddling them. The government is unable to control what people say on social media so they see reduction of participation as a major policy plank. Ditto the “opposition parties”.

Of course, the government is claiming that restricting social media access is all about child protection. This is utter nonsense. Social media has been around for around 30 years. My own kids, both of whom are in their late 20s, have been routinely using social media since they were in their early teens. Smart phones (and app stores promulgating social media apps) have been around since 2007.

On the plus side, the UK government’s plan to ban under-16s from mainstream social media platforms by Spring 2027 faces severe implementation hurdles.

Australia provides a handy case-study (having banned under-16s using social media platforms in December 2025) and indicates that the policy will likely fail to curb usage because of widespread technological workarounds, strong incentives for platforms to maintain user bases, and fierce opposition from privacy campaigners.

The Australian experience shows massive circumvention. Research data shows that nearly 70% of Australian children retained or created new social media accounts despite the ban. Because the desire to connect with peers is strong, teenagers easily bypass age-verification gates.

The data also shows a shift to darker alternatives. Banning mainstream sites has fueled a spike in downloads for lesser-known, unregulated, or decentralized apps. This pushes younger users out of curated environments and into deeper online corners.

And, of course, VPNs and technical workarounds are available. Teenagers quickly turn to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and peer-to-peer sharing to spoof their locations or bypass age restrictions altogether.

Of course the likely response from social media platforms to the proposed UK legislation is also entirely predictable. The platforms rely on self-declaration or friction-based age checks (like photo ID matching or facial estimation). Historically, they do not aggressively purge underage users as it directly hurts engagement metrics and ad revenue.

Also SM companies might argue that age-gating should be the responsibility of app stores (Apple App Store or Google Play Store) rather than implemented at the individual platform level.

There will also be regulatory challenges. Regulators like Ofcom are finding that accurately distinguishing a 15-year-old from a 16-year-old is highly difficult. This makes creating watertight enforcement metrics nearly impossible without locking out legitimate adult users.

But the greatest hurdle will be pushback from internet freedom campaigners and ordinary adult users who will baulk at having to provide personal information or facial recognition scans to tweet or post photos from Granny’s birthday party.

Aggressive age assurance policies such as facial scanning or submitting government IDs (via services like Yoti) creates massive privacy risks, normalises mass surveillance, and puts minors’ biometric data at risk of breaches.

And the proposed legislation is effectively internet censorship that will ultimately end anonymous account creation for all users in the UK, altering the foundational freedom of the internet.

If you enjoy The New Era you may wish to read my debut novel, South of Market.

I was there at the birth of both the IBM PC in 1981 and the Apple Macintosh in early 1984. Both of these were very significant technological milestones for humanity. The latter created a particular emotional rush.

In those days, developing clients (when selling tech to them) was a personal process. You visited them, befriended them, worked with them. You knew their issues and how to ease the pain those issues caused. Spending time in their businesses was a privilege – I saw inside different industries, different cultures, and I witnessed the birth of so many great ideas.

By the time I was in my late thirties my knowledge of the tech industry and all its many quirks had served me well. Then, ‘supply chain management’ arrived. All of a sudden, everything shifted. It was no longer about how good you were developing relationships, but how good you were jockeying algorithms.

What followed for me was a shift away from front line selling and into ‘program management’ and ‘influencing’. It was ‘selling’ – but with a whole slew of obscure job titles that added to the general professional bafflement.

In tandem, as a photographer since my teens, I transitioned to digital photography. At last – no more fretting about carefully calculating exposures, or angst about running out of my 12 exposures on a roll of film. It was such a rush being free of such constraints. I was also editing video.

Then, the crash happened, and to cut a long story very short indeed – I decided to have a career switch. The industry I’d worked in for 25 years was suddenly ‘wall-to-wall’ apps on smart phones and 20-somethings beginning the slow (but relentless) quest to shut the real world out from behind earbuds. Whether it was instinct, or a rush of madness, I jumped. I was touching 50 and I felt like Grandad. With some nice compliments from similarly aged colleagues, I plunged into the post-apocalyptic world and had a fairly sizable shift into specialised landscaping (essentially putting plant walls onto the sides of buildings) and dabbling in overseas property. I went back to school part time to learn design in my late 50’s.

Switching careers at that age is not for the faint of heart. Let’s just add that a global recession, an ageing body and the largest global architected ‘disease’ psyop of all time are not the most fertile conditions for embryonic growth of new enterprises! Add in the ‘Poseidon Adventure’ effect of white middle-aged, heterosexual men suddenly finding themselves at the very bottom of the UK societal pecking order – and what followed was pretty much a ‘lost decade’.

Turning 60 became a watershed moment. I was in a bookshop in Norwich and suddenly realised that I was a deeply analogue person who had been ‘temporarily hijacked’ by a tsunami of digital development – technologically, societally and culturally. As I recently saw on a You Tube interview video by a young twenty-something addressing baby boomers: “you allowed technology to just let rip”. Yes, young Sir, we did. Please don’t judge us too harshly – it snowballed out of our control. In fact, we never had any control.

Analogue got swept out of fashion because those using it had control. My late father – a Chartered engineer – built his own radiogram and made his own furniture when we were little. He serviced the family car himself and I inherited my love of horticulture from both my parents, who were prolific in that department too.

Clothes in many households got made (or altered). I once popped into a London dry-cleaners on the way back to the office after a nice lunch with a client. They told us that they had a suit in for cleaning that had spanned three generations from the 1930’s. It was still in great shape.

So began a love affair with vintage clothing. As I’m typing this, I am also researching the demise of the Northampton shoe and boot making industry. I’ve visited and photographed the last ‘proper’ shoe and boot factory in Derbyshire – who have a very full order book stretching out over a year – with eager clients all over the world craving hand-made boots.

Working clothing is mostly made in Asia or the heavily subsidised countries in the European block. Much of it is not well made – and largely disposable. Fashion clothing even worse – with major retail chains a few years ago caught dumping excess runs of lines directly into vast tracts of South American desert (labels still attached), hoping the sun and the weather would eventually rot them to ribbons without detection.

Whilst we are daily lectured and preached all sorts of nonsense about ‘sustainability’ – real sustainability is under all our noses – and it’s mainly analogue. I’m a prolific collector of vintage boots, shoes and clothes. I’m in the throes of sifting, sorting, photographing and re-selling them many of them on to a new audience. I’m delighted to report that some of that audience is quite young. Their desire for micro-wardrobes driving less – but better made - clothing.

So, what is my conclusion? I’m drifting boldly where a few more are going with me. I do not hate the digital world. I love the fact that (in its purest, unmolested state) it provides the vast majority of eight billion people an ‘eighth wonder of the world’ level content and communication platform which allows everyone to find everyone else and ‘share’.

That’s an epic achievement in the span of a couple of generations. But, as will befall all great innovation, there have been a lot of abuses of this wonderful technology. Tim Berners-Lee did a wonderful Christmas Reith lecture on these actual and potential further abuses. You won’t (of course) find that lecture on iPlayer.

I hope we will see a ‘recalibration’ of digital usage as a backdrop to analogue creativity. Digital cannot match the numerology and beauty of natural flora and fauna. It cannot transmit the soul of a hand-finished image painted or taken on canvas or on film. It cannot write with soul.

We are at a crossroads now. What happens next is entirely up to the collective will of eight billion souls on this wonderful planet.

(Richard Francis)

When Truth Drifts

Modern societies often assume that more information automatically leads to better decisions. frameworks that enable their operations.

Modern societies often assume that more information automatically leads to better decisions.

Governments collect vast amounts of data, organizations use advanced analytical tools, and citizens live in a constant stream of digital signals. Yet this explosion of information has not made institutions more perceptive or responsive. In many cases, it has had the opposite effect. Institutions seem less able to understand what is happening around them, as if the abundance of information had weakened rather than strengthened their ability to see clearly.

This problem is not due to a lack of intelligence or resources. It stems from a deeper shift in how institutions relate to knowledge. Rather than seeking to understand the world as it is, many institutions now focus on protecting the internal frameworks that enable their operations. They become more concerned with maintaining stability than with adapting to new realities. As systems grow more complex, this tendency intensifies. In some public agencies, for example, procedures become so rigid that staff spend more time ensuring compliance with internal protocols than addressing the situations those protocols were meant to address. The form survives, but the function erodes.

Within large organizations, the nature of expertise has changed. People are often promoted not because they understand real-world conditions, but because they can keep internal procedures running smoothly. The most valued skill is no longer the ability to read a situation accurately, but the ability to preserve the institution’s preferred way of interpreting events. Over time, this creates a kind of cognitive rigidity. Institutions become very good at defending their models, even when those models no longer match what is happening outside. This pattern can be seen across sectors, including education, healthcare, and finance, where individuals who raise inconvenient observations are often told that “the system doesn’t work that way,” even when the system’s assumptions are visible.

This rigidity shows up in how institutions use metrics and indicators. Tools such as dashboards, performance measures, and standardized categories are meant to help organizations. But they also narrow what institutions can see. When internal indicators define success, they begin to replace reality. Anything that does not fit predefined categories is treated as an exception or an error. Instead of adjusting their models to match the world, institutions try to make the world fit their models. In some school systems, for instance, standardized performance metrics have become so dominant that teachers report spending more time preparing students for the metrics than for teaching the underlying. The indicator becomes reality.

When the gap between official interpretations and lived experience grows too wide, institutions rarely revise their assumptions. Instead, they resort to protective language. The modern vocabulary of “misinformation” is a good example. These terms often function less as tools for identifying truth than as tools for defending institutional authority. By labeling certain perspectives as illegitimate, institutions avoid confronting the limits of their own frameworks. The debate shifts from evidence to credibility: the issue becomes who is allowed to speak, not whether what they say is accurate. This pattern appears whenever organizations dismiss field reports, practitioner insights, or community observations simply because they do not align with the official narrative.

But institutions cannot fully control how people understand the world. Much of what individuals know comes from their own experience — from their work, communities, and daily interactions. This knowledge is local, practical, and often difficult to formalize. Centralized systems cannot capture it, no matter how sophisticated they are. When people repeatedly encounter contradictions to official explanations, they begin to lose trust in them.

Outside institutional centers, alternative forms of understanding emerge. Independent researchers, practitioners, and observers often notice patterns that large organizations miss. Their ideas spread slowly but endure because they make sense of what people actually see. These alternative frameworks do not require institutional power to survive. They persist because they explain reality more effectively than official narratives. History is full of cases in which small groups of observers detected emerging problems long before large institutions acknowledged them — from early warnings in public health to analysts who identified financial vulnerabilities years before major crises.

Digital archives strengthen this process. In the past, institutions could maintain control by limiting access to information. Today, independent analyses remain available indefinitely. They can be revisited, compared, and shared whenever institutional explanations fail. This creates a parallel memory that institutions cannot erase. Even if they dominate the present with curated narratives, they cannot eliminate the record of competing interpretations.

This shift is part of a broader historical transition. Institutions built during the industrial era were designed for a world where information moved slowly and coordination. They relied on standardization and centralized control. Today’s environment, by contrast, is fast, fluid, and decentralized. Knowledge is produced everywhere, not just at the center. Institutions struggle not because they are poorly managed, but because they are structurally mismatched to the world they inhabit.

As a result, their authority weakens. Institutions do not collapse under external attack. They erode because they can no longer provide convincing explanations. Their crisis is not primarily political; it is cognitive. A system that cannot integrate feedback eventually loses its capacity to self-correct. It becomes a machine for preserving its own assumptions rather than a tool for understanding reality. When organizations treat every contradiction as a threat rather than a signal, they lose the ability to learn. Once learning stops, decline becomes inevitable.

In this context, the key question is not how to gather more information but how to stay open. Freedom does not depend on the size of our databases or the sophistication of our algorithms. It depends on our willingness to recognize when our models no longer work. Societies that maintain this openness can adapt and recover. Those that cling to rigid frameworks are ultimately corrected by events they failed to anticipate.

More information does not guarantee clarity. What matters is the ability to learn from the world rather than forcing it to conform to our expectations. When institutions lose that ability, they lose their connection to reality — and reality always has the final word.

is a Canadian sociologist and critical anthropologist with advanced doctoral training at Laval University. However, I’ve had a (very small) core group of paid subscribers since the site started accepting paid subscriptions a few years ago. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all.

However, I’ve now taken the decision to switch off monetisation on the The New Era.

There are a few reasons.

Firstly, while it is very gratifying to have people pay me - it’s the ultimate vote of thanks for a writer - I don’t need the money and it’s never exactly been lucrative anyway. And I don’t want people to get the impression that I write in order to be paid or to gain ‘influence’ for sponsors or subscribers. Or that money in any way influences what I write or how I think. Or that I write what I think my paying subscribers will want to read.

But the more important reason is this. For several weeks now, I have been receiving emails from Stripe, Substack’s exclusive payment processor, insisting that I have to provide lots of personal information (including a copy of my passport and facial scans) in order to put my ‘account in order’ and to maintain payments. Stripe is not a bank. It’s a payment processor. So I’m not prepared to send this digital data to an organisation that has no right to hold it.

In a recent interview I made clear that I was able to express opinions and exercise free speech because I was fortunate enough not to need money to do what I do. That puts me in an extraordinarily fortunate position. It means that whatever I write I’m not being incentivised to do so by clicks, payments or eyeballs.

I’d like to thank the thousands of you who have subscribed to this site because you get some value from my writing, interviews or perspectives. All posts, from now on, will be open for comments from the entire subscriber base. But, please, keep it clean and keep it courteous.

Remember, the best way to support free thinking and freedom of speech is to read and to engage. And feel free to disagree with me.

Also if you have a burning desire to write for the site - even just a guest opinion piece - do get in touch.

Belfast, Riots and The Agenda

The riots in Belfast play to a very sinister establishment agenda

Jeffrey Peel

Shortly after the news broke about the ‘attempted beheading’ of a white man by a black man in Belfast, I had a chat with . So we discussed it. However, perhaps we focused too much on whether the attack had been staged. Aisling’s of the view that many ‘attacks’ that are labelled ‘fake’ or ‘manipulated’ by so-called conspiracy theorists like MiriAF, James Delingpole and Francis O’Neill, have, in fact, happened. And perhaps she’s right. As the furore over the ‘Belfast Beheading’ has unfolded more information has emerged about the victim and it’s Aisling’s view that it was a real attack.

In my view attacks such as this have the same impact on the audience, staged or not. A genuine attempted beheading and a faked one look pretty much the same when recorded by a distant smartphone.

Therefore, the reality of the attack is undisputed in that the video footage was promulgated and the reaction was predictable. Regardless of whether it really happened, was provoked to happen, was staged or fake, the media visibility (of the handily recorded video) has resulted in violence, protest, global media coverage and calls for social media censorship.

As the Northern Ireland MLA, Clare Hanna, has noted, other stabbings happen routinely, in Northern Ireland and across the British Isles, often resulting in death, but Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage, Katie Hopkins and the rest aren’t engaged to muster a response designed to provoke riots.

As you know, I’m of the view that politics and actors like Robinson are manifestations of the establishment. The establishment seems intent on creating mayhem (in the interim contained within benefits-class areas of Belfast) in order to augur a Reform government that will install a de facto surveillance state and strict border controls.

The systematic open border policy of the Conservative and Labour governments (and the provision of benefits/housing to ‘illegal’ immigrants) will be reversed. But the price will be MAGA-style ICE policing, digital ID, and a surveillance panopticon.

Others have noted the BBC’s almost total focus on the Belfast riots, as far as its recent news coverage is concerned. I didn’t hear it, but apparently the BBC Radio 4 Today programme was entirely dedicated to a discussion about immigration policy given the situation in Belfast.

This implies that the media is intent on putting immigration right at the heart of the agenda. But this, clearly, required planning and orchestration. It didn’t happen because of what a black man did in Belfast. It happened because it has been planned to happen.

However, the Overton window, as far as immigration is concerned, is all about the current situation versus the Reform/Restore/Robinson antidote.

The view from the window implies that very large numbers of people are being permitted into the UK and are immediately permitted housing and benefits. The policy of ‘fighting age men’ being housed in hotels, raping and pillaging all around them, and beheading people, is now the definitive policy issue of our time according to Farage, Lowe, Habib and Robinson. The counter to this policy, according to Farage, Lowe, Habib and Robinson, is to create a strict border policy. Lowe wants most foreigners deported too.

So that, therefore, is the choice: beheadings or a police state, it’s your call. Except that’s Hobson’s choice.

Clearly most of us would choose neither. On immigration I’d suggest that few people would object to an open border policy if immigrants were able to be self-reliant from arrival. Without the promise of free housing and accommodation and benefits, few less desirable immigrants would arrive. Others, wealth creators, would be very welcome - just as elite footballers are welcomed by the biggest ‘English’ football clubs.

When around 10,000 Huguenots arrived in Ireland in the 1680s, they brought with them skills in banking, crafts and textile weaving. As far as I know, they didn’t get housed in hotels for illegals.

Some half a million people came to England from the Caribbean - the so-called Windrush generation - and have contributed much to British culture, cuisine and business. But, notably, the Windrush immigrants rapidly filled jobs in sectors with severe skill shortages, created their own financial institutions (like credit unions), and businesses serving their own communities. Often they were excluded from social housing because of racial prejudice - they weren’t housed in hotels.

People who migrate tend to do so because they seek a better or safer life. Typically they are proud and self-reliant unless they are essentially trafficked by the state to create mayhem. That’s the playbook happening right now in Belfast. And the entire establishment is planning it, stoking it and covering it.

SOMA Warsaw

Over the weekend I presented my book, and attended a panel discussion, at a film festival in Warsaw

Jeffrey Peel

It’s probably about 30 years or so ago when I was last in Warsaw. There’s been a serious amount of empire building going on in various war theatres - most of which has advantaged the Military Industrial complex and, as Simon Dixon calls it, the Financial Industrial Complex.

My recent post outlined the degree of obfuscation around the “war” in Iran in order to hide the corporatising of Israel, the Levant and, inevitably, Iran itself. All of the foundations are in place. Therefore, it’s now time for the Damascene conversion of the “Christian” right away from Zion.

The radical change was marked, of course, by Charlie Kirk’s “assassination”. Following this, many of the leading MAGA cheerleaders, like Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and MTG, have been parroting the line that Israel and Netanyahu are essentially controlling MAGA and Trump. All claim to be devout Christians. A bit like JD Vance (although he’s apparently a Catholic version, so devout, that he lectures the Pope on geopolitical protocol) - who converted from Atheism a matter of months before he was ‘chosen’ to be Trump’s running mate.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Former US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene explicitly confirms Donald Trump was forced to make a secret deal with the Zionist lobby to become president. She exposes how the Trump administration is completely held captive by Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel.

This is quite convenient, as far as media narratives are concerned. After all, Team Trump has ensured that the syndicates are installed, the corporations are aligned. So perhaps America should retreat back to its expanding home empire of New Oceania and let others run the show now that the cabals are in place.

The obvious question is, what’s the timeline? Is the (orchestrated) schism in MAGA going to result in Trump’s exit? Will this happen this year? And will JD Vance slowly become aligned with this subtle anti-war positioning?

Who knows? But The “Israel controls America” narrative is clearly agency-led using their favourite commentators and lobbyists. What’s the end-game here? That America disengages from the Middle East and Israel aligns with the BRICS? Because this is not organic. It’s a controlled narrative…

I’m leaving this post open. And how does the fighting manifest itself?

That might seem a somewhat daft question when there are wars all over the place. But often the purpose of wars is not just about killing people (typically people just buying some bread or going to school). Wars are, increasingly, key components of obfuscation - hiding what’s actually going on. Wars are useful vehicles for division. They encourage people to take sides and argue for or against the various combatants. And why should such arguments be encouraged by the war-mongers? Because when we end up arguing about the wrong things we don’t get to see the big things, even when they should be really big and obvious. When we’re distracted we don’t see, we don’t understand.

Yesterday I reposted this piece by Morgan which highlighted the big thing that we’ve been forced to ignore in the unfolding ‘conflict’ in the Middle East. Her analysis has one central idea: that wars are typically about theft. And it’s the thieving that we’re not allowed to see.
<div class="embedded-post-wrap" data-attrs="{"id":195436457,"url":"https://morganc000.substack.com/p/the-usual-architects","publication_id":1120260,"publication_name":"Morgan","publication_logo_url":"https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!6vtn!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F1787f666-23a3-42dc-be17-309a13e32161_500x500.png","title":"The Usual Architects","truncated_body_text":"There is a particular kind of man who looks at a smoldering ruin and sees, before the smoke has cleared, a development opportunity. These days theft - and I mean really big theft - is less about just snatching things, and more about deal-flow. The central premise that she presents is that one category of theft is to create property redevelopment opportunities by bombing places to smithereens that have already been earmarked for redevelopment anyway. In her analysis the game-play was developed around 9/11. Organise the demolition of the twin towers, then rebuild them with other people’s money. But pocket most of the assets in the process.

In the unfolding mess in the Middle East we have ‘Iranians” apparently bombing sweet shops in Tel Aviv while American fighter jets circle overhead. Meanwhile in Southern Lebanon RAF jets from Cyprus keep an eye on developments on the ground as ancient trade routes get reopened without those pesky villages harbouring “Hezbollah” militants. And Zones are created. Development Zones. And funds, it turns out, have already been raised for their redevelopment, just in time. Funny that.

Of course this isn’t the only game in town. But it neatly makes the point that modern warfare is not just about Palantir. It’s about people stealing stuff and using governments to grease the wheels of the process of thieving.

The other ‘big thing’ in the Middle East conflict is market rigging. With the ‘closing’ of the Straits of Hormuz, and the associated ‘panic’ in energy markets, the consequence has been a gift - and a grift - for the petrochemical companies. This was a leading news story today (about BP) on Twitter/X:

BP Profits Double to $3.2 Billion Amid US-Iran Oil War Surge. The British energy giant credited its windfall to strong oil trading and refining amid the war that began in early April 2026, with Brent crude spiking due to restricted flows.

Meanwhile we hear about deals being negotiated, even when the Iranian ‘regime’ is in tatters. But still, they negotiate. First Iran closes the Strait. Then America. We hear about tolls being levied. But perhaps the USA should be charging the Chinese tolls? Should the Chinese be paying tolls to the Americans? Should they be paying in bitcoin or in Tether? Are the Iranians accepting Tether? Isn’t the US Trade Secretary something to do with Tether? Wasn’t Epstein involved in Tether and that guy with the strange Thai name who used to fund Boris but now funds the Reform Party?

And so the war, it seems, is in some way related to oil company profits, and digital money, and who gets to pocket the tolls and who gets to control the critical bottlenecks. And why aren’t Russia and China complaining? Is this multipolarism in play?

Whatever the truth is we can be sure that it’s about asset theft. They have the guns after all.

There’s an anecdote that used to do the rounds during the ‘peace’ negotiations in Northern Ireland over which Tony Blair once presided. Rumour has it that a leader of a political party felt somewhat left out. The negotiations seemed to be focused on the hardliners. Blair is reputed to have said that the ones with the guns were the main players in the peace talks.

And so it is that the main players in the resolution of the Russia Ukraine War are the Americans and NATO negotiating with the ‘defence’ companies. After all, the only people who can deliver peace are those that provide the instruments of war. But there’s little incentive for any hurry. More dollars can be borrowed after all. More money can be printed. More villages need to be bombed to clear the way for this or that. And, remember, LNG is best transported by tanker. That’ll require new routes. New roads, new logistical partnerships. More exploration. Specialist skills. And everyone has to play their part. Iran has big LNG fields. Western companies can help them get those resources to market once the sanctions are lifted. That’s the prize. Funds can be created that will help. Infrastructure can be built.

That’s the deal flow, you see. There are deals to be done arising out of war. Stability can be achieved. But the people need to know that in building back better than before new structures need to be created that mean that we don’t lurch back to old ways. The old ways, you see, got us into the predicaments, the situations that create war.

As Craig Wright put it (on the other platform)...

We are in a war.

Not a metaphor, not a flourish, not an exaggeration uttered for effect — a war in the truest, starkest sense. A war for freedom. A war for humanity itself. A war in which the battlefield is invisible, the weapons are abstractions, and yet the consequences are more tangible than steel. This is a war over the future of ownership — the future of whether a man shall own himself or merely lease the illusion from those who presume to rule him.

The New Era is a reader supported publication. media

However, Ms Spring overlooks a very obvious problem - that the very platforms that she claims to be amplifying divisive and hateful content have been deplatforming, censoring or reach-suppressing people with opinions for years. And, often, users have self-censored by closing accounts.

I deleted my Facebook account when they started actively censoring my content - and made me the subject of an investigation by a ‘Fact Checking’ agency. Incidentally, I was not spreading ‘hate’ or ‘misinformation’. I’m a former Director in two international market research agencies. So whatever content I produce is always well-researched. Also I’ve never included any false information in my CV (unlike Ms Spring).

I still have a Twitter account but my content has negligible reach and my follower count has been pretty much static for the last 2 years. Ms Spring has blocked me on Twitter since around 2021.

One can only conclude that Spring’s omission in her ‘investigations’ of the role played by state actors - to control content and amplify propaganda - is deliberate.

So I asked Grok (X’s large language model tool) to tell me if Spring had made any effort to investigate the degree of collusion between the social media platforms and state intelligence agencies. For example, had Spring covered Matt Taibbi’s work on the ‘twitter files’ that uncovered such things as FBI staffers working in Twitter’s offices in South of Market? Grok is trained on social media content (including Springs own) so it’s the obvious place to check for balance.

And even Grok had to admit (if AIs can ‘admit anything’) that the omission is odd:

Your point about Matt Taibbi’s extensive reporting on the Twitter Files, detailing FBI coordination with Twitter (now X) on content moderation, account suspensions, and disinformation labeling, is valid and highlights a notable gap in Spring’s coverage.

Taibbi’s disclosures, released in installments starting December 2022, revealed internal communications showing FBI agents flagging posts for removal, pressuring on narratives around elections and COVID, and even involving other agencies like DHS in what he described as a “censorship-industrial complex.” This work has been substantiated through leaked documents, congressional hearings (e.g., the House Weaponization Subcommittee), and Taibbi’s own publications on Racket News, where he argues it demonstrates systemic government overreach into private platforms.

Searches across web sources, BBC archives, and Spring’s X activity (spanning her posts on disinformation, social media moderation, and related topics) turn up no instances where she has referenced the Twitter Files, Taibbi’s findings, or specifically FBI/CIA roles in platform censorship. This absence persists despite the Files’ relevance to her field: they’ve influenced global discussions on tech-government ties, with follow-ups like the Facebook Files and judicial rulings (e.g., Missouri v. Biden on alleged First Amendment violations). If Spring were pursuing a fully impartial lens on disinformation ecosystems, one might expect at least some acknowledgment—perhaps critiquing Taibbi’s methods, contextualizing the revelations, or exploring parallels in UK contexts like GCHQ’s involvement with platforms.

Possible explanations for this omission include:

Institutional constraints: As a BBC journalist, Spring operates under the organization’s impartiality charter, but the BBC has faced accusations of aligning with establishment narratives on intelligence and foreign policy (e.g., its partnerships with entities like the Atlantic Council, which has ties to US/UK security apparatuses). Covering US intelligence overreach could risk complicating those relationships or inviting scrutiny from UK regulators like Ofcom.

Scope of her role: Her investigations often center on bottom-up conspiracies (e.g., QAnon networks, anti-vax groups, or foreign state actors like Russia/Iran amplifying division) rather than top-down government-platform collaborations. For example, in her “Marianna in Conspiracyland” podcast and BBC Verify work, she dissects how algorithms push users toward extremism, but rarely probes how Western governments might contribute to content shaping.

Geopolitical focus: Taibbi’s revelations are heavily US-oriented, involving the FBI’s 80-person team liaising with tech firms. Spring’s output is more Euro-UK centric, such as analyzing Brexit misinformation or recent UK riots fueled by online falsehoods. However, this doesn’t fully explain ignoring a story with transatlantic implications, especially post-Elon Musk’s acquisition of X, which she has commented on broadly (e.g., changes in moderation leading to more hate speech).

Critics, including alternative media figures like those in The Grayzone or on Substack, argue this selective blindness suggests a pro-establishment bias, prioritizing “debunking” dissent that challenges Western narratives while sidestepping scrutiny of allied intelligence actions. Her past CV embellishment scandal (admitted in 2018, involving overstated experience) has fueled skepticism about her credibility in some circles, though it predates her BBC role.

Ultimately, while her work provides value in exposing real harms from online conspiracies, the consistent avoidance of Taibbi’s documented evidence does raise questions about comprehensive impartiality in covering disinformation’s full spectrum. If evidence emerges of her addressing these topics, it would counter this pattern—but based on available records, it hasn’t.

"WE", "Regime Change" and "Democracy"

A guest article by Hugh McCarthy

Jeffrey Peel

My good friend, , sent me this article. to try to answer in terms of a holistic view of political events, which will include my view of the West’s and the US’s foreign policies.

I believe in the right to self-determination and the right of peoples to govern themselves, even if “we” do not like how they choose to do it. I do not believe that we have the right to impose our view of democracy. Actually, I do not believe there is anything moral or visionary in what we are doing. We support many oppressive regimes in the Middle East and Africa — just as long as they are our allies. We have failed to speak up for certain countries (e.g., Tibet) nor for Christian communities (e.g., Armenia, Syria and other places) presumably because it does not suit.

We have left a trail of destruction across the world — see Vietnam, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Syria, Libya, Iraq, and now Iran — in the name of bringing peace and democracy. We will bomb you to save you.

I believed in a free-speech democracy. I am now sadly disillusioned— I thought I had the right to express my views, even if the authorities did not like them. Isn’t democracy supposed to champion differing views and free speech? So, I opposed school closures, masking, and COVID vaccinations for children. I also made my opposition known about the WHO sexualisation of children (starting at the age of four) and the concept of transgender ‘education’ in the primary school curriculum. But my views were simply not welcome.

But this experience encouraged me to read widely about ‘our’ interventions and wars with nations that needed to be taught a lesson about our version of ‘democracy’.

Ukraine

Before the current war, I was aware that the eastern part of Ukraine was ethnically Russian and largely Russian-speaking. Ukraine elected a Russia-facing president. What would you do if you had a giant neighbour on your border? Being on friendly terms would be essential with respect to trade, transport, energy, etc. The US did not like it, so he was deposed, and Zelensky was brought in. His regime started to “Ukrainify” Eastern Ukraine—language, job discrimination, street names, school books, the downgrading of the Russian Orthodox Church—this eventually sparked opposition which turned violent, and hence the alleged reason for the war. In addition, NATO has moved 1,000 miles further east than it promised the Russians it would (rather like the white Americans betrayed the American ‘Indians’ with repeated broken promises (do read, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee).

The West repeatedly scuppered obvious solutions, such as autonomous status for the Donbas region within Ukraine.

Regarding Crimea — what would you do if you were Russian? Russia’s only warm water port is Sevastopol in Crimea; its navy is docked there. If Ukraine joined NATO, Russia would lose its port and badly damage its naval capacity. (Actually, Crimea was neither Russian nor Ukrainian; I believe it is/was Tatar).

When did the phrase “regime change” enter our vocabulary, and since when was it an acceptable democratic policy objective?

The Middle East

So, first up! I have long opposed US and Western policies in the ME and view the current war as a continuation of those policies: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

I mentioned earlier one’s own values.

I am a member of the majority community in Northern Ireland; it is very committed to Israel’s rights — that the Israelites were promised the ‘Promised Land’ by God. There is, by and large, widespread and often blind support for Israel.

That it discriminates against Christians in Jerusalem and is purging them is not known/mentioned.

750,000 Palestinians lived on the land before Israel established itself in 1948 — dispossessed and forcibly exiled.

Apparently, this was acceptable… and still is.

Israel attacked Gaza and the West Bank, allegedly because Hamas attacked it. So, we are told that a regiment-sized group of Hamas penetrated the most guarded border in the world, which also used the upgrade of US movement and heat detectors used in Vietnam —placed at very close intervals above and beneath ground — they did so 15 times. The army unit guarding the border was transferred a couple of days before. Not a hand was laid on the attackers, and nobody within the Israeli military or security forces was sacked, and nobody in the mainstream media (MSM) pointed this out.

This has led to the terrible bombing of civilians. Would RAF bombing of Catholic nationalist areas of Belfast have been acceptable during the 1970s when more people were killed by the IRA bombing campaign than died in the Hamas raid, just because IRA bombers hid and/or lived within the civilian community?

This brings us to Iran and to Israeli policy of a greater Israel and/or US policy, which appears to be regime change and the removal of WMD. The stated aims of the two main allies are different. So, how will we know if they are achieved — so that “they” can claim victory and stop?

Why is regime change a now acceptable policy objective and by force? Is it acceptable to bomb a civilian population?

Is Iran a threat to the US or UK? If so, how?

It seems the US wants to replace all Middle Eastern governments with acquiescent states.

So, I strongly disapprove of the Zionist regime and its stated aim of a greater Israel and the US’s stated aim of regime change and the method of achieving the subsidiary aim of de-nuclearisation.

What has been done is a double whammy: it has driven Christians from the Holy Land, Syria, and Lebanon and facilitated the huge numbers of political Islamists into Europe and the UK, seemingly changing the very nature of the UK.

As in Northern Ireland, force alienated the nationalist population, and more people joined the bombing campaigns. Do we imagine that Arabs will like us more, or will it produce more martyrs?

Do argue, dispute, disagree.

Hugh was recently interviewed by David Kurten, the leader of the small UK Heritage Party. You can watch the interview here.

Technocracy Rising

Watch now | Patrick Wood and Hrvoje Morić discuss the Epstein file release, Tether, Mark Carney's speech at Davos...and the galloping pace of technocracy.

Jeffrey Peel

Yesterday I had the pleasure to chat with Hrvoje Morić, Editor and Host of Geopolitics and Empire, and Patrick Wood, one of the foremost writers and commentators on the Technocratic movement.

Patrick Wood is an Economic & market forecaster, speaker, and author of Technocracy Rising: The Trojan Horse of Global Transformation, and Technocracy: The Hard Road to World Order. In April 2022, Boris Johnson visited Ukraine to meet Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy. Johnson’s visit didn’t result in peace talks with Russia or a reinstatement of the principles of the Minsk agreements. Quite the opposite, as it turned out.

According to this Guardian article, “The idea that Johnson also used the visit to ensure Ukraine did not sign a peace agreement with Russia first emerged in an article in the respected Ukrainska Pravda outlet in May 2022, which said that Ukrainian and Russian negotiators had agreed on a broad possible agreement after a meeting in Istanbul in late March. A week later, Johnson arrived with a message that “Putin is a war criminal, he needs to be pressured, not negotiated with”, according to one of the outlet’s sources.”

Johnson resigned as Prime Minister in September 2022. But just 2 months later, Johnson’s office received a donation from a Thailand-based businessman called Christopher Harborne, the biggest shareholder of UK Defence company QinetiQ (through two of Harborne’s operating companies). The donation, of £1million, was one of the biggest donations ever to an individual UK politician. In January 2023, the Conservative government awarded a contract worth £80m to QinetiQ.

Johnson revisited Kiev in September 2023. But, this time, he was joined by the man who gave him £1m.

QinetiQ is actively involved in “supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts”, particularly through the provision of technology, training, and engineering support for military hardware.

Christopher Harborne became the biggest financial backers of the Reform Party, last year. He donated some £9m - although it’s not clear whether the donation was in fiat currency or cryptocurrency. Nevertheless, the donation dwarfs donations to the other UK political parties - even from hedge fund owners. The donation goes some way to explain why Reform Party apparatchiks, like Isabel Oakeshott, want to make it appear that Peter Mandelson was working for the Russians rather than the Israelis. Because, of course, Reform’s backers make a good return on the genocide in Gaza - and the war in Ukraine.

attended a high-profile London fundraiser for Donald Trump that raised $2.5 million. While Farage was in attendance to support the campaign, the event was co-hosted by Howard Lutnick.

Lutnick has been described as Tether’s most powerful U.S. ally. He did not create Tether but stepped in around 2021-2022 to prevent its collapse during a liquidity crisis, transforming it into a “crypto darling”.

Recent, DOJ-released documents (February 2026) show that Jeffrey Epstein had close ties with Brock Pierce, a co-founder of Tether. The documents also confirm that Lutnick and Epstein were business associates.

Clearly it’s significant that Reform is the recipient of funding and/or support from a major investor in Tether - and a UK military contractor active in both Ukraine and Israel - as well as Tether’s banker (Howard Lutnick via Cantor Fitzgerald). Tether is essentially being positioned as a private sector dollar ‘CBDC’. Moreover, it is ‘backed’ by US Treasury stock currently yielding over 4% - resulting in vast profits for Cantor Fitzgerald and iFinex. So it is helping to fund America’s vast debt pile - and associated dollar devaluation.

Howard Lutnick’s association with Epstein has resulted in calls for Lutnick’s resignation as US Commerce Secretary. So the Reform Party should make clear whether its relationship with Harborne is compatible with its requirement to support the UK’s sovereign currency (should it ever gain the reins of power). But, more fundamentally, the Reform Party needs to clarify whether if it is de facto ‘owned’ by a military contractor.

Subscribe now
