Extinct Smilodon populator: A prehistoric tiger-sized cat, the largest of the 3 Smilodon species and more robustly built than any living cat, weighing 480 to 900 lb. Its long upper canines were relatively slender and weak, perhaps adapted to a precision bite. Lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene. (Charles Knight)
