GIs from the 83rd Infnatry Division contemplate German road signs in the French city of Saint Malo, summer 1944. One of the first jobs the German occupiers completed throughout the occupied territories was to fill the place with German-language signs -- predicting a long stay that turned out to be less than five years in most places.
