Hand -forged iron forks sometimes called spade forks, are for pulling out roots or harvesting vegetables such as beets. The horizontal wood or iron elements at the top of the fork heads support the pressure of the gardener's foot.

The mechanism of clippers with two rows of overlapping metal teeth derived from that of wheat-harvesting machinery. The long-bladed clipper with a double row of teeth resembling a sawfish, far left, is the only one that allowed the gardener to stand parrallel rather than perpendicular to the hedge.

A parade of pruners includes tools to snip and cut the most delicate of flowers or the thickest of branches. Sometimes pruners were fashioned from the iron of worn-out steel files. Because they had to be sharp at all times, many featured a large screw that could be loosened to access the cutting blade for sharpening. By 1900 higher-gauge steel rendered this operation less important.
