This vintage black and white photo of a female clown is probably a studio portrait cabinet card rather than a circus photo. “Cabinet cards” were a popular format for photographic portraiture from 1870 through the 1920's. Initially used for landscape views, they were later used for family portraits. Large enough to be easily viewed from across the room, they were typically displayed on a cabinet, hence the name "cabinet cards".
