This week I was fortunate enough to come across tickets to the opening of Disney’s Tony Award Winning Musical Newsies which depicts the real life story of the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City. Cartoon by Lewis Hine, circa 1912. The industrial revolution brought a great shift in society with the rise of factories. Terrible working conditions occurred to the point of being more dangerous than coal mine workers. Average workers were being paid low wages despite working days as long as 14 hours. Children and women became drastically employed due to difference in pay range from men, resulting in child labor. Fearing of losing their job, no one complained about the terrible conditions.

A newsie is a nickname for a newsboy. Newsies, the Disney movie turned hit musical, is based on the New York newsboy strike of the early 1900s. While there are main characters, such as Jack Kelly and Crutchie, this costume guide is for a generic newsie. It's easy to make for any musical theater fan.
