Polyphemus, head of Hellenistic statue (marble), 2nd century BC, (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). "Hear me, Poseidon who circle the earth, dark-haired. If truly I am your son, and you acknowledge yourself as my father, grant that Odysseus, sacker of cities, son of Laertes, who makes his home in Ithaka, may never reach that home". Polyphemus is the cyclops who captures Odysseus and his crew. He is the son of the God Poseidon. Polyphemus prays to curse Odysseus and his crew after they escape.
