Updates

  • Broader data, stronger rights: New PCT rules are improving international patent searches. Two key changes took effect on January 1: 1. Broader search coverage: International searches now draw on a patent collection based on twice as many sources, including Brazil, Egypt, India, Poland and Saudi Arabia. 2. Full-text exchange of patent data: IP offices in PCT member states are now sharing patent applications in full-text instead of image-only format, strengthening the depth and reliability of prior art searches worldwide. What does this mean for you? ☑️ More comprehensive international search reports and written opinions ☑️ Stronger patentability insights early in the process – one of the key advantages of the PCT ☑️ Reduced risk of relevant prior art emerging later, when amendments are more complex and costly Beyond individual applicants, these improvements support higher patent quality and a more transparent and balanced international patent system. Most of the newly included patent collections are available through WIPO's PATENTSCOPE database, giving innovators worldwide expanded access to technical knowledge. • Inspired by NASA. Taking off with WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty. For Estonian inventor Mattias Lepp, growing a continuous supply of fresh herbs and greens at home should not be rocket science. While his “Click and Grow” indoor garden was inspired by controlled-environment plant research for space missions, the result is far simpler: a self-managing system that automatically manages light, moisture and nutrients, making it easier for people everywhere to eat fresh and green. To support the international rollout of his technology, Mattias used WIPO’s PCT, which streamlines the process of seeking patent protection in multiple countries through one unified procedure. • Does the festive season inspire inventors? 👩🔧💡 We’d like to think so, and we found proof in this international patent application for a “snowman making device”, filed by Anthony Klaves: https://lnkd.in/gk9ZDVRb Addressing the “deficiencies of prior art snowman making device inventions,” the device is capable of producing lightweight “snow spheres that can be stacked upon each other to make a snowman” with ease. What more could busy fans of creative winter fun ask for? It’s also a reminder that innovation isn’t only about high-tech labs or life-changing breakthroughs – sometimes, it’s about rethinking simple joys, making them easier for everyone, all year round. Happy holidays and best wishes from all of us at WIPO Patents and Technology. #WIPO #Patents #Innovation #SeasonalGreetings
