Voice actors, let’s talk about starting out in a new genre. The first step isn’t making a demo. I repeat: do not start by creating a demo. It’s tempting to rush in, but paying for a demo before you’re ready is a costly mistake. Voiceover is nuanced, and each genre has its own unique techniques and style. Without understanding those, you’re not giving yourself a fair shot. The first step should always be education. Invest in learning about the genre—understand its demands, sharpen your skills, and immerse yourself in the technique. Every genre of VO, whether it’s animation, commercial, audiobook, or promo, requires acting as its core, but each has a specific approach. Once you have the training, once you’re confident in your understanding and delivery, that’s when a demo makes sense. Not before. Talent development is about building a foundation first, not jumping straight to the showcase.

Editors, keep it simple!  Sure, showcasing your slick editing abilities may be tempting to do, but does it serve the project? Aspiring screenwriters often ask me: “How can I get my script read by someone who can bring it to life?” It’s a question full of hope, and in some cases, frustration. So let’s talk about it. First and foremost, understand this: sending unsolicited screenplays—whether to producers, agents, or filmmakers—is a big no-no in the industry. It’s not because we don’t want to discover great stories (believe me, we do!), but because unsolicited work creates legal risks and professional boundaries that must be respected. Instead, focus on these actionable steps to get your work noticed: 1. Find Representation: An agent or manager advocates for your script while ensuring it’s delivered to the right hands. Research reputable literary agencies, and query them with a polished, professional letter. 2. Feedback, Polish, and Polish Again: Before you send your script anywhere, make sure it’s ready. I’ve written pages I thought were gold until someone challenged me to dig deeper. Join writer groups, get feedback, rewrite, and rewrite again. 3. Enter Screenwriting Competitions: Festivals and contests can act as the spark that ignites careers. Winning (or even placing) at respected competitions like the Heartland, Cannes, or Tribeca Film Festival gives your work credibility and opens doors to more opportunities. 4. Make Connections: Build organic relationships in the industry. Attend workshops, the aforementioned film festivals, and industry panels. When you’re ready to share, do so professionally. People need to trust you as much as your writing. 5. Just Start Already!!: Don’t wait for permission to create. Write short films, produce small projects with friends, and put your work out there. Some of the greatest careers began with one small, brave step. The truth is, every one of us—even the greatest writers of all time—started as an unknown storyteller. The key is to combine your talent with persistence, humility, and respect for the process. Make sure you’re giving others every reason to believe in your vision. In the voiceover industry, we face rejection on a regular basis. Most of the time the rejection is in the form of silence. We audition for a project and we never hear back. Sometimes we will get "shortlisted" for something and then hear "sorry, they went another way on this". While getting shortlisted is a win in itself, somehow these rejections are almost more emotionally painful ("ah, I was so close!"). I'd like to share something though that has helped me handle these so-called rejections immensely. There are SO MANY wonderfully talented voice actors out there! Wait, why does that make me feel better??? Because, it's made me realize that sometimes getting booked for something is simply luck of the draw. There is so much talent out there and so many of us can really deliver... so getting the actual job often comes down to simply the specific sound of a voice, a tiny nuance in a read, or even totally random things like the order with which the client listens to your audition or even (and this is true according to conversations with casting directors I've had) whether you share a name with the client's ex-girlfriend! The point is, I have learned not to take it personally or doubt my own abilities when I get a "no". I simply move on and go for the next one. Recently, someone posted a copy of a spot they voiced. I had auditioned for this too and oh boy, I REALLY wanted this one. But I was able to listen and say "she did a great job". Honestly, my audition had sounded very similar to the read that they went with but...her read was wonderful too. Good for her! I hope this realization helps others like it helped me. Getting a "no" is most often not a reflection of your talent. It's just not your turn. Cheer on others and keep going. You will get your "Yes" soon enough. #voicecasting #handlingrejection #voiceoverindustry

“I’m gonna be a GREAT voiceover artist!” Can you hear yourself or someone you know say this? (Perhaps you need to substitute voiceover artist with “carpenter,” or “singer” or “teacher.”  Whatever interests you.) While that’s an admirable goal, perhaps it’s too broad.  Becoming “great” requires practice, dedication, persistence, training, failing and rising again, problem-solving skills, confidence, drive, eagerness, creativity, desire,…oh, yeah: fun. It takes a lot. Some experts suggest it can take 6 years or more to become truly great at a skill. It doesn’t happen overnight. There are so many genres and avenues in any line of work, including voiceover. Realistically, you probably won’t become great in all of them. You have a better chance at becoming great if you narrow your goal.  Focus. Pick a genre. Pick a specific skill. Then, “do it.” So here’s another thing: don’t get discouraged if you’re just starting out. Have fun, like we all did in the beginning. If you have fun, you’ll learn to love it, and THAT’S when it clicks. When you love something, you’ll want to “do it” all the time. “Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. A conversational read isn’t just about sounding friendly—it’s about creating a connection, building trust, and making the listener feel as if you’re speaking directly to them. So, what makes a great conversational read, and why can it be so elusive? Here are a few essentials: 💬 **Authenticity Over Perfection**   A conversational read is less about enunciating every word perfectly and more about authenticity. Listeners want to feel like they’re hearing a real person, flaws and all. Pauses, slight imperfections, and natural cadences make the performance believable. 👂 **Connecting With the Message**   To sound conversational, you need to fully understand and feel the message you're delivering. Whether it’s an ad, narration, or explainer, knowing *why* you’re saying something helps bring out the right tone and pace. I often imagine I’m talking to a friend or a single person in my audience—someone who needs to hear what I have to say. 🎭 **Subtlety in Performance**   In a conversational read, less is more. The voice has to carry sincerity without pushing too hard, like in a sales pitch. Finding that balance between warmth and restraint takes practice, and sometimes it’s about letting go of “performance” and focusing on “sharing.” 🧘 **Relaxing Into the Read**   A conversational read doesn’t sound scripted, and achieving that often means relaxing into the lines. Before recording, I take a few moments to loosen up, focus on the message, and even read through the lines conversationally a few times to find the rhythm.
