I didn't target manufacturing as my first career choice. I wanted to sell golf equipment for Titleist or Ping. But life had other plans. I ended up interviewing with Flambeau, a company that made duck decoys. They offered me a customer service job in Wisconsin in 1985 in their contract manufacturing business. I came home and told my father I didn't think I was going to accept it. He said: "You're moving to Wisconsin. You've got a job offer, you're leaving the house." That's how I wandered into manufacturing. I started in customer service at Flambeau, you learn the business from the customer's perspective, understand pricing, and build relationships with customers. Then I moved into sales covering Iowa, then Minnesota, and ultimately worked my way up to VP of Sales. 30 years later, I was still there. What I learned early on: manufacturing isn't about selling products off the shelf. Contract manufacturing is about convincing companies that your company can make products for them at a competitive price and with excellent quality and service. But the foundation is always the same: understanding your company and knowing your products and capabilities well enough to speak technically to customers and their engineers, and building that trust. You're going to have problems on every single job. Every single time. How you and your company resolve those problems - that's everything. The relationship and trust you build through solving problems together That's what keeps customers coming back for decades.
