About
I have been deeply involved in shaping Microsoft's global trajectory since joining the company in 1984 until I retired in September 2024. Most recently, I served on the Executive Committee alongside CEO Satya Nadella as President and Executive Vice President (EVP) of Global Sales, Marketing, and Operations. In this role, I helped building dynamic ecosystems that ranged from small businesses and start-ups to public sector organizations and global industry leaders. I was at the forefront of Microsoft's transformation into a cloud and AI leader and oversaw the entire commercial business, managing 124 subsidiaries worldwide.
In the final chapter of my career at Microsoft, I was Executive Vice President and President of National Transformation Partnerships. I spearheaded initiatives that fostered the digital transformation of national economies, driving sustainable and inclusive growth. I have been a passionate advocate of entrepreneurship for good. I designed and launched a global Entrepreneurship for Positive Impact initiative that accelerated the development of more than 2,500 of the most promising environmental and social impact start-ups from more than 100 countries across the globe.
I have been a student, practitioner and now an ambassador of positive leadership. I believe that mission led leaders can unlock the potential of their teams, fostering a culture of well-being, success, and societal impact. This philosophy inspired me to create and host the Positive Leadership (buzzsprout.com) podcast, where I engage with leaders and authors who excel in inspiring others align personal and organizational missions to bring out the best in people.
Beyond my Microsoft journey, I am the President of Live for Good , a foundation I co-founded with my family in 2015. This initiative focuses on unlocking the potential of young people from diverse backgrounds through impact entrepreneurship, fostering innovation within a highly engaged community.
I’m a graduate of SKEMA Business School, where I serve as Chairman of the Board since 2017.
I also held key roles in various global forums such as to Co-chair of the World Economic Forum's Digital Divide Working Group and contributed to the European Commission’s Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Working Group.
I’m also a member of the ManpowerGroup Board of Directors, a global leader in HR and recruitment services, and I serve as Chairman of the Mission Committee at OpenClassrooms a leading EdTech company that makes Education accessible to all.

During my stay in the Seattle region for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States , I had the chance to visit Snoqualmie Falls and North Bend places that millions of people around the world know without necessarily having been there. For many, these landscapes are inseparable from Twin Peaks, the extraordinary series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. The waterfall became the unforgettable opening image. The Salish Lodge became the Great Northern Hotel and brought back memories of the many Microsoft team offsites I held there over the years. Twede's Cafe became the Double R Diner, home of its legendary cherry pie and "damn fine coffee" although, to be honest, perhaps not quite that fine for a true coffee amateur. And the old industrial mill, with its chimney and raw timber-town presence, became part of the mysterious world of the Packard Sawmill. But what touched me most was not only the mythology of cinema and television. It was the power of the place itself. Snoqualmie Falls is not just a spectacular natural landmark. It is also a sacred site for the Snoqualmie people, a place where water, mist, forest, memory and spirit seem to meet. Standing there, you feel both the beauty and the depth of the Pacific Northwest. And this is perhaps why Twin Peaks continues to fascinate us so deeply. Beneath the surface of a small town, it explores duality: light and shadow, innocence and loss, nature and industry, dreams and reality, the visible and the hidden. As I walked through North Bend, from the falls to the café, from the mountains to the old industrial traces, I was reminded that every place holds many stories at once. Some are visible. Some are hidden. Her software had saved him 20 minutes a day. That one sentence pulled her out of pure engineering and into product. She suddenly saw that the code on her screen was touching someone's actual evening, someone's actual family. It reminds me of Kevin Johnson on the podcast. He left Microsoft to run Starbucks, and his whole idea of leadership came down to one thing: the joy of serving a real person. Take the human out of the work, and all you have left is tasks. I told myself that pushing hard was the same as caring deeply. Coaching taught me the flaw. When the leader is the most intense source of pressure in the room, people do not grow. They brace. They spend their best energy surviving you instead of building the thing you are both there to build. This month’s newsletter holds one question without blinking: Is the way you lead helping people grow, or helping them survive you? The data is sobering. Gallup studied 2.7 million employees and found that managers account for 70% of the variance in team engagement. Seven of every ten units of difference between a thriving team and a withering one come down to one person. And only about one in three employees strongly agree that anyone at work encourages their development. Two thirds of people are being managed, not grown. She was only asking her team to do what she would do herself. I met Anu earlier this year in Silicon Valley during an AI learning tour I was doing with Boardwave, a group of European CEOs. We were moving fast, meeting extraordinary people, absorbing as much as we could about where AI is truly taking us. And in the middle of all that intensity, Anu said something that made me stop. Her lesson from that early management moment: "When you lead people, it is not about you. It is about them. You want to understand what they want, and take them to a place they want to go." I smiled because I made the exact same mistake. In my early years at Microsoft I was known as Mr Plus. Always asking for more. Always raising the bar. Jean-Philippe Courtois shared thisDepuis dix ans, j'ai la chance de passer beaucoup de temps auprès de jeunes entrepreneurs sociaux. Vingt, vingt-cinq ans, parfois moins. Ils ne cherchent pas d'abord à faire carrière. Ils cherchent à réparer quelque chose : l'accès à l'école, la santé mentale, l'alimentation, l'inclusion. Des sujets que ni l'État ni le marché ne savent vraiment prendre en charge. Avec Live for Good, nous les accompagnons. Et à leurs côtés, j'ai surtout appris l'humilité. Ils ne demandent pas qu'on les assiste. Ils demandent qu'on croie en eux, et qu'on leur en donne les moyens. Or quelque chose est en train de se gripper. Les financements publics du monde associatif reculent, année après année. Le budget 2026 pourrait retirer plus d'un milliard d'euros aux associations. Derrière ce chiffre, il y a des milliers d'acteurs de terrain qui tiennent, souvent sans bruit, une partie de notre démocratie. Car c'est bien de cela qu'il s'agit. Une presse libre, des associations vivantes, des citoyens qui s'engagent : voilà les véritables moteurs d'une démocratie. Quand on cesse de les financer, ce n'est pas une ligne budgétaire que l'on coupe. C'est un peu de notre capacité à faire société. Je ne crois pas que la puissance publique puisse tout porter seule. Le secteur privé, les fondations, les investisseurs ont un rôle à jouer. Financer celles et ceux qui éduquent, soignent, protègent et informent, ce n'est pas de la charité. C'est un investissement dans ce qui nous fait tenir ensemble. Jean-Philippe Courtois shared thisEvery serious CEO today needs a new title. Not an additional one. A redefined one. CEAIO. Chief Executive AI Officer. Not a role you create and delegate. A responsibility you own personally, deeply, firsthand. And let me be clear about what this means and what it doesn't. Being a CEAIO isn't about becoming an AI engineer or replacing your technical experts. It's about something far more fundamental: defining your company's strategy first, then making AI the engine of its execution. The leaders who get this right don't start with AI. They start with purpose, vision, and direction and then ask how AI can accelerate every part of it. Stéphane Bancel said it best on the Positive Leadership Podcast: "Any company that's serious in AI, the CEO has to be the chief AI officer." When compute doubles every six months, AI isn't a capability you manage through a committee. It's the business itself, and the person accountable for the business has to understand it from the inside.I've seen what this looks like in practice. Three guests from the podcast embody it in three completely different worlds. Pascal Soriot at AstraZeneca is rebuilding drug discovery around AI not through a dedicated function, but as a core CEO conviction. He's using AI to predict the probability of success of Phase 3 trials worth $300-500M each. That's not delegation. That's personal mastery at the highest stakes. Mackenzie P. co-founded Alpha Schools on a radical premise: AI can deliver the full academic curriculum in 2 hours a day, freeing children to develop the human skills that matter most. She didn't hire an AI director. She built the model herself, from first principles. Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic and former editor-in-chief of WIRED, is navigating one of the most existential AI challenges in media asking the question only a CEAIO can answer: what does human judgment and storytelling mean when AI can produce content at infinite scale? Three sectors. Three leaders. One posture: AI fluency as a personal, non-delegable CEO responsibility not to replace the experts around them, but to ensure AI serves the strategy, not the other way around. Jean-Philippe Courtois shared thisOn a flight last month, a senior partner at one of the world's leading global law firms said something I can't stop thinking about. "I'm losing them. My experienced managers and my new hires. Both delegating to AI on complex cases, on hard judgment calls, on the moments that are supposed to build them." She wasn't afraid of AI. She was mourning something deeper: the disappearance of thinking as a professional habit. I see the same thing. Every week. At SKEMA Business School, where we're reinventing how we train the next generation. At Live for Good, where I work daily with young impact entrepreneurs who can't afford to outsource their conviction because their entire purpose depends on owning it. And it pushes me to say three things I believe deeply. Your managers' job is no longer to get things done. It's to grow people. In an AI world, output is table stakes. Any tool can produce output. What only humans can do is develop other humans through challenge, through feedback, through the kind of conversation that changes how someone sees a problem. If your managers aren't doing that deliberately, you're building a productivity machine with a hollow core. Don't tolerate AI underdevelopment. That's what I call it when a young professional lets AI replace their judgment rather than sharpen it. It's not efficiency. It's atrophy. The partner on that flight wasn't worried about AI taking jobs. She was worried about people giving away the one thing AI can't replicate: a hard-won point of view. Teach your people to own their opinion first. Then use AI to stress-test it. Stop managing careers. Start building intrapreneurs. At Live for Good, our young entrepreneurs develop through co-development, collective intelligence, and a burning sense of purpose not through rotation programs. They lead something real, take real risks, and grow faster because of it. Young employees don't need a structured ladder. They need genuine ownership of something that matters. The World Economic Forum just sounded the alarm: entry-level hiring has collapsed 80% per quarter at AI-adopting companies. The structured experiences that used to build judgment, resilience, and leadership instinct are gone. Not gradually. Fast. That's not a statistic. That's a generation being set up to lead without ever having learned how. Here's the question I'd ask every leader reading this: when did you last tell a young person on your team : "I don't want to know what the AI said. I want to know what you think"? If it comes from knowing which answer matters, and why, then you have never been more needed. That line sits at the heart of the editorial I wrote for the new issue of Glimpse by SKEMA Business School. Here is what makes this moment so exciting, and so easy to get wrong. AI is an extraordinary accelerator. On the podcast, MacKenzie Price showed me how her Alpha School already doubles the speed at which children learn, using AI to personalize everything and freeing teachers to do what no machine can: grow human potential. But let's not confuse fast learning with real expertise. A machine hands you answers. It does not build the deep mental representations that let you read a complex situation, the judgement for the calls where the rules run out, or the intuition to catch a weak signal nobody else noticed. That mastery is tacit. It is earned slowly, in contact with real life. So the future will not be decided by replacement, but by interaction. Ethan Mollick's latest thinking captures the shift: we are moving from co-intelligence, learning to work with AI, to co-existence, learning to live and decide alongside systems that are sometimes, but not always, smarter than we are. The real skill now is reading that jagged frontier: knowing where AI shines, where it quietly fails, and when to trust your own judgement instead. Years ago on the show, Microsoft's Kevin Scott put it simply: the point is to empower people with AI, not replace them. Because in the end, the question is not what AI can do for you. It is what you choose to enhance with it. Expertise is not disappearing. It is becoming more demanding, more intentional, and more profoundly human. So I'm curious. Where do you draw your own line? Jean-Philippe Courtois shared thisHier, à Seattle, le football m’a rappelé pourquoi je l’aime depuis toujours. Belgique–Égypte, au Lumen Field. Un match de Coupe du monde dans une ville qui occupe une place très particulière dans ma vie. Seattle, c’est pour moi plus de 40 ans de voyages, de rencontres, de travail, d’amitiés et de moments forts, liés bien sûr à Microsoft, à Redmond, et à une partie essentielle de mon parcours. Mais hier, au milieu des supporters, des chants, des drapeaux, des maillots et de cette énergie unique que seul un stade peut créer, c’est une autre mémoire qui est remontée : celle de mon enfance et de ma passion pour le foot. J’aime le foot depuis tout petit. Gamin, puis adolescent, et encore pendant de nombreuses années, j’ai joué en amateur. Sur un terrain, j’ai appris bien plus que des gestes techniques : l’effort collectif, l’esprit d’équipe, la confiance, l’humilité, le plaisir d’une passe réussie, la déception d’un match perdu, et cette émotion si forte d’un but marqué avec son équipe. En lisant "Une passion absurde et dévorante" d’Olivier Guez, j’ai retrouvé des mots pour dire ce que je ressens depuis longtemps. Le football est un espéranto. Une langue commune. Une tour de Babel inversée : non pas celle qui sépare les peuples, mais celle qui, pendant 90 minutes, permet à des femmes et des hommes venus de partout de se comprendre sans parler la même langue. Bien sûr, cette Coupe du monde est aussi controversée. Elle est immense, peut-être trop. Elle porte les marques du business, de la démesure, et de toutes les contradictions d’un monde globalisé qui se fragmente. Mais hier, dans ce stade, j’ai aussi voulu voir autre chose. J’ai vu des supporters belges, égyptiens, américains, européens, africains, des familles, des enfants, des passionnés, des curieux. J’ai vu des couleurs, des sourires, des chants, des regards. J’ai vu cette capacité rare du sport à suspendre, un instant, le bruit du monde. Un match ne répare pas les fractures de la planète. Mais il peut rappeler que la rencontre est encore possible. C’est peut-être cela, le secret du football : créer, au milieu de toutes nos différences, un espace commun. Fragile. Imparfait. Mais réel. Hier à Seattle, le ballon a roulé. Et avec lui, quelque chose de plus grand que le jeu : une émotion partagée, une respiration collective, un petit morceau d’humanité. Puisse le ballon rond continuer à rouler là où tant de frontières se referment. Et surtout, puisse-t-il continuer à créer du sens, là où notre monde a parfois tant de mal à en trouver. #Football #WorldCup #Seattle #PositiveLeadership #Sport #Humanity

Philanthropy has been part of the American story from the very beginning. But right now, too many of us seem uncertain about how loudly to speak, or whether to speak at all. In my latest piece for Inside Philanthropy, I look at the history of American giving and how our greatest accomplishments, from Philadelphia's first library to the March of Dimes, were never simple charity. They came from a clear vision of civic participation, of uplifting everyday people and improving the institutions that served them. Philanthropy has always been a partner in the public-private work that makes this country strong. But communities, not foundations, have always held the clearest answer to what actually needs funding. None of the assumptions guiding strategic philanthropy today, such as scaling what works, systems change, and measurable impact, matter much if we don't have a healthy democracy and a vibrant civil society to uphold them. That means giving equal energy to remaining ambitious and staying close to the people we set out to serve. It means learning from our best instincts throughout history: sharing power more genuinely, speaking more plainly, and standing publicly by the nonprofit partners and people who make our work possible. One of his last essays was a beautiful critique of digital twins and the Silicon Valley obsession with them. "The twin doesn’t just represent you. It restructures how others relate to you. The copy becomes the relationship. Send out the twin, and you have not freed yourself for deeper thinking. You have replaced the possibility of being surprised by another person with the certainty of your own archive."

Les décrocheurs. Celles et ceux qui, un jour, décident de tout changer pour repartir ailleurs. Du moins, c'est ce qu'on croyait. Mais ça, c'était avant. Avant, qu'est-ce qui nous éloignait, au juste ? Pas le talent, ça c'est sûr. Ce qui nous manquait, c'était le réseau, le capital, les codes, la bonne information au bon moment. On était loin. Loin du travail, loin de l'entrepreneuriat. Sauf que l'éloignement n'a rien de naturel. Il se fabrique. Et tout ce qui se fabrique peut se défaire. C'est pour ça que le #DÉTERTour existe. Demain, il fait étape à #Lyon. Avec une idée simple : on ne vous attend pas, on vient directement chez vous. Ville après ville. Marseille, Nantes, Lyon demain, Toulouse et Lille ensuite. Là où, d'habitude, on n'a pas vraiment l'habitude de nous voir débarquer. Une journée entière où des gens qui ont construit quelque chose viennent raconter le vrai de leur histoire. Les portes fermées. Les refus encaissés. Et puis ce moment, parfois minuscule, où quelqu'un vous ouvre une porte, et où tout bascule. Regardez seulement qui sera sur scène. Hash Moussa, Poisson Fécond, Ouassila S., Chanfi IBRAHIM, Thibaut Chatelard, Marie Christine PLASSE, Magali Tassery, Claire BLETON-MARTIN et tant d’autres que je ne peux pas citer tout le monde dans un seul post. Des chemins qui n'ont rien à voir les uns avec les autres. Et qui se rejoignent tous sur un point : à un moment, une porte s'est ouverte. Des parcours extraordinaires, des voix uniques, des idées à défendre et des parcours à suivre. Toutes leurs histoires disent une chose : ce qui manque, ce n’est jamais le talent, parce que le talent est partout. Ce qui manque, c’est l’accès. Je suis très fier de pouvoir compter sur la Fondation LCL, qui rend cette étape possible, sur Serge Magdeleine, Violaine DELVAL, Guillemette ALARY, Thierry Compagne et toutes leurs équipes. Très fier aussi de l’engagement qu’il a fallu aux équipes des Les Déterminés pour fabriquer cette tournée dans tout le pays. Demain, Lyon, montre ce que tu sais faire. It was the widening gap between what we can build… and what we’re truly ready to scale. From startup pitches on our ManpowerGroup booth to conversations across a wide range of sessions, partners and communities, one theme kept coming back: innovation is accelerating fast, but skills, adoption and workforce readiness are struggling to keep up. Startup after startup, one thing was clear: creativity is limitless (you do wonder which problem isn’t being tackled 😉). And while it provides us opportunities to innovate with the latest and greatest, scaling it into impact requires much more than great tech, it requires the right capabilities, at the right time. And beyond the startup ecosystem, conversations with CHROs, CTOs and CEOs confirmed it: the real challenge isn’t whether to innovate, it’s how to make it work in real life. How do we align ambition with execution? Technology with skills? AI with responsible decision-making? Across panels, podcasts and interviews, my conviction kept growing stronger: transformation will not be led by technology alone. It will depend on how intentional we are to invest in people, in reskilling, upskilling and building the confidence to work alongside AI. The discussions on hybrid intelligence made this tangible: the question is no longer what AI can do, but how we choose to use it and how we ensure humans stay firmly in the lead. Engaging with institutions and partners also reinforced something essential: work will continue to evolve profoundly, at scale and across borders, but it remains a cornerstone of our societies. And shaping its future is a shared responsibility. Leaving VivaTech, I probably have more questions than answers but also a clear sense of urgency: we are not just passive observers of this monumental shift.
