A lot of the conversation right now is about Walmart hitting a $1T market cap. What’s more interesting to me isn’t the number itself. It’s what it takes to operate at that level without breaking. At this scale, success isn’t driven by a few great products or big bets. It’s driven by process and efficiency. Clear expectations. Repeatable execution. Systems that work for both buyers and the vendors operating inside them. From the buyer side, efficiency matters. Fewer surprises. Programs that run clean. From the vendor side, the bar is high but clear. If you perform consistently, the system works. If you don’t, scale exposes the gaps quickly. That dynamic is hard to build and even harder to maintain. But when it works, it compounds quietly over time. A $1T valuation isn’t about hype. In 2025, retailer brands hit record sales and outgrow big brands. Shoppers want good value and good quality, and retailers now offer premium and functional options too. Where it’s already mainstream: -United States. Retailer brands grew +3.7% vs +1.1% for national brands. Sales are close to $280B , a record. For many shoppers, own brands are the default. -United Kingdom. Own-label share stayed near parity with brands (about 47–52%). Premium private label is growing fast. -Western Europe. In several countries, private label is over 40% of category sales. It’s part of the regular basket. Where it’s growing up: -Asia–Pacific. 54% of consumers say they now buy private label more often (leaders: Thailand, India, China, Indonesia). People see it as “good enough quality at a fair price.” -Latin America. Share is lower than in Europe, but growth is faster than the global market. Big room to grow, especially for discounters and club formats. Where it’s still early: Middle East & Africa. In many countries, share is still under 2%, but momentum is building as modern retail expands and shoppers seek affordability. Why this is happening: -Value without trade-offs. Most shoppers see private label as “good value for money” and a real alternative to brands. The stigma is fading. -Retailer strategy. T-Mobile Expands Device Connection Charge to Apple Purchases T-Mobile is continuing to evolve its pricing strategy, and not necessarily in ways customers expected from its earlier “Un-carrier” positioning. Starting March 27, purchases of devices through Apple, whether in-store, online, or via the Apple Store app, will now include T-Mobile’s $35 Device Connection Charge, or DCC. Previously, this channel had been one of the few ways customers could avoid the fee. The charge will not appear at checkout, instead it will be added to the next monthly bill due to platform limitations within Apple’s system. This move effectively closes a long-standing loophole. After the change, only select channels like Samsung Electronics, Costco Wholesale, and Sam's Club remain exempt. The DCC itself has been a point of friction for years. Originally tied to in-store support, it has gradually expanded to online transactions, with the rationale of creating a more consistent billing experience. Many customers, however, continue to view it as an unnecessary surcharge rather than a value-added service. For consumers, the trade-off becomes clearer: buy through Apple with carrier integration and pay the fee, or purchase unlocked devices independently and potentially miss out on carrier promotions. Dear U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, You and the USPTO should absolutely link up and talk battery tech! I was fortunate to align with the team at ARROE in late '19 where we developed "state of charge" and "state of health" technology that allows battery and charger manufacturers to remotely see real-time operating condition, including thermal behavior via our system-on-chip. That tech was granted a U.S. patent in February of '24! We were also fortunate that Best Buy Amazon and Ingram Micro placed early commercial bets on our flagship system that brought our IP to market. Several friends and family chose to invest alongside us as well. For the first time ever, we could see operating conditions before failure and thermal runaway! Not after. Before! Seems like a decent data set, yeah? And yet in '25, major brands continue shipping products with no visibility into whether a battery is failing, at end of life or becoming a safety hazard. We are now watching the consequences unfold in real time through escalating recalls across the industry, including Anker Innovations LTD, Belkin, iniuofficial, among others. The situation with RadPower Bikes LLC is especially sad to me...scope my first comment to their CEO...seems like he saw it and he chose not to engage. Yep, the technology exists...and the regulations are catching up.
