This week I said "Hey Peregrine, turn on the awning lights and set brightness to 50%" and watched a voice assistant running on a single-board computer recognize the wake word, process the intent through a 1B parameter LLM on a dedicated NPU, and send an MQTT command to the edge gateway on a separate machine. The gateway translated that into a CAN bus message and sent it to a relay module that switched the 12V circuit. No internet. No cloud. Three devices coordinating over two protocols to flip a light on in microseconds. A week ago, none of that worked together. Peregrine could listen and respond but had nothing to control. Switchback could switch relays but only from a dashboard. Plateau could measure vehicle pitch and roll. Bearing could read GPS coordinates. Headwaters could bridge MQTT and CAN. Each piece worked on its own. None of them talked to each other. Six repositories. Four different microcontrollers. Three programming languages. Two single-board computers. Five days of integration to connect all of it through one CAN bus. Getting individual modules to work is engineering. Getting them to work together is architecture. Every module needed to agree on message formats, handle devices appearing and disappearing on the bus, manage state without a central authority, and fail gracefully when any piece goes offline. That's the same problem at every scale. Microservices that need to stay in sync. Enterprise platforms where the integration is harder than the features. Fleet systems where a hundred vehicles each run their own edge stack and the cloud has to make sense of all of it. The interesting engineering is never the individual pieces.
