As countries around the world recognise the huge potential of #fusion, breakthroughs in this technology are happening thick and fast, so it was wonderful to host NZ's fusion startup OpenStar Technologies at Homewood, the British High Commissioner's residence. Thank you to Rodney Badcock, FRSNZ and Darren Garnier for introducing me to Sai Potturu & Lawrence Nobbs, two visiting UK researchers contributing to their cutting‑edge work. It is a special time to meet. As Outset Ventures reported last week: "OpenStar demonstrated something that no private fusion company has done before: it floated a 500kg superconducting magnet confining plasma. This is a major step toward sustained fusion energy". Last year the UK Government placed fusion energy at the heart of driving #innovation, economic growth and energy security. The UK is investing £2.5 billion over the next 5 years into fusion energy. As demand for energy‑intensive growth sectors like #AI accelerates, #fusion becomes more strategically important for both countries. It was inspiring to hear how OpenStar is supporting the next generation of UK talent through placements with the UK Research and Innovation EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Superconductivity: Enabling Transformative Technologies, across University of Bristol, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford. Wonderful to connect the team with Peter Dirken from Innovate UK. Innovate UK deliver the UK government’s clean energy mission, including funding, R&D programmes, and a £500 million R&D Missions Accelerator Programme. This is people‑to‑people collaboration in action: strengthening knowledge #supplychains, deepening capability, and helping both our economies capture value from frontier technologies. The presence of UK researchers in Wellington is a brilliant example of what UK–NZ science partnerships can achieve.
