I can’t stand senior engineers who act like genius jerks.  Here’s what they typically do:   1. They dismiss your ideas without even hearing you out.   2. They belittle your work and make you feel small.   3. They love pointing fingers when things go wrong.   4. They take credit for others' work & they play politics 5. They create a toxic environment instead of lifting others.  6. They refuse to help, treating your questions as if they’re a waste of their time.  As a senior engineer, it’s never about:   • Writing super complex code:  – Simplicity is the mark of a great engineer.  – Complexity often creates technical debt.  • Using fancy technical jargon – Your goal is to make things understandable for the team, not to show off.  • Solving the most problems:  – It’s not about the sheer number of problems solved – it’s about solving the right problems most effectively.  • Building over-engineered or impressive designs:  – Great designs are thoughtful, efficient, and practical.  – Knowing when to stop and avoid unnecessary complexity is key.  • Introducing new tools or frameworks just for the sake of it:  – A senior engineer evaluates if a tool adds value.  – The goal isn’t to chase trends but to improve workflows meaningfully.  It’s always about:   • How you treat others:  – Do you collaborate with respect and patience?  • How you share knowledge:  – Are you helping your teammates learn and grow?  • How you create a positive and supportive environment:  – Are you contributing to a culture where everyone feels safe and valued?  • How you protect your juniors in cross-team conflicts:  – As a senior, you take responsibility for shielding them when needed.  • How you motivate, celebrate wins, and own losses:  – You push your juniors forward for recognition and take the blame when things go wrong.  •  How you uplift your juniors & show up for your team: – Being reliable and available when your team needs you is what builds trust and respect.  Your real impact isn’t in the complexity of your code or the number of problems you solve.  It’s in the way you inspire, guide, and elevate the people around you.

Shopify asked this in their frontend interview: build a color palette with selectable swatches and copy to clipboard. It sounds like a 10 minute task. But when I broke it down, there were decisions to make: * Do you select by index or by a unique value? (One breaks if the list ever changes.) * How do you show "Copied!" feedback that auto-resets? * Is each swatch a div or a button? (One is accessible by default, the other isn't) Small question, but it reveals how someone thinks about reusability, accessibility and state design. Screw vibecoding. You know what LLM coding agents are *really* useful for? Reverse-engineering legacy code! "Hey can you research and explain how the flux capacitor settings are loaded, specifically where are the margadon-level overrides applied exactly?" It's a lifesaver.

If you're applying for a software engineering position through a company's website, and the application won't go through because of a configuration issue, and you notify them of the problem and tell them how to fix it, that should be an automatic bye through a couple of interview rounds, right? Right?
