🌍 Geospatial data just got a major upgrade in Apache Iceberg. After years of debate, hundreds of PR comments, and a remarkable open source collaboration, Apache Iceberg now supports native geospatial types. With native geometry and geography types now part of the v3 Iceberg spec, spatial data is no longer a second-class citizen in the modern lakehouse architecture. Here are some ways you can use it: ✅ Filter pushdowns using real spatial predicates (like ST_Intersects and ST_Crosses) ✅ Bounding boxes stored and used natively for fast pruning ✅ Integration with Apache Sedona and Wherobots for full spatial query support ✅ Support for standard encodings like WKB and CRS metadata ✅ And time travel for your spatial tables This is the foundation for cloud-native, analytical-scale spatial data management. 👏 Huge kudos to Jia Y. One of the first diagrams Earth Science students are shown is the source-to-sink diagram of Earth's surface. And yet this framework has never been tested across the modern Earth surface—until now. In their new #Geology article, Caltech researchers Martin and Lamb harmonized global data products to make a global database of Earth's sediment sources, bypass zones, and sinks. Food webs are an important part of ecological research, and it turns out that graph automorphisms provide key structural insights. For anyone hoping to learn graph automorphisms or interested in kicking their ecology research up a notch, I'd highly recommend this paper: https://lnkd.in/erx9CBcP

In February, the #ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript added track rendering (beta) for live streamed data and historical data. We just added a new sample that demonstrates the configuration options using hurricane data from the 2005 and 2006 hurricane seasons. The new options give you a lot of flexibility in defining styling and labeling options for all entities. In this example, the latest observations are shown with an animated hurricane symbol whose size varies based on the storm's category; previous observations are simple markers where larger and brighter icons indicate a stronger storm; and a track line is added to show the path of the storm. I love how the bloom effect fades in and out such that active storms are brightest and previous storms are faded. This creates a neat effect similar to a lightning strike. #5 SpectralGeologyThursday - Let’s find some deposit! (Pixels will tell us the truth) K2 Gold recently reported high grade surface rock samples in their Mojave Project (California). They’re exploring areas like Gold Valley and Soda Valley – chasing visible gold and copper oxide minerals in altered breccias (https://lnkd.in/dakBfmrr) We decided to do our own take on Soda Valley – but from space. Using open-access EMIT hyperspectral data and Sentinel-2, we ran in TerraEye: - Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) - Custom indices - False Color Composites - Spectral curve validation vs USGS library We detected hematite and goethite anomalies aligned with the general directional trends. Why hematite and goethite? Because in hydrothermal systems, especially those related to Au-Cu mineralization, hematite is often associated with advanced alteration and iron-rich fluids. The fact of mineralization zones related to occurence of hematite and goethite was also highligthed by K2 Gold. Is it a usefull insight? What do you think?
