That idea is a powerful life strategy called via negativa — the art of subtracting, not adding. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀: We rarely know exactly what creates success or happiness. But we do know what destroys them: 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁, 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲. Negative knowledge (what not to do) is more reliable than positive advice. Our brains aim to persuade, not to find truth. We make decisions emotionally, then justify them logically. We don’t think like scientists. We think like lawyers. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝘀 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗮𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 describes two modes: Fast thinking → 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 Slow thinking → 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 Both are useful — but using fast thinking for high-stakes decisions leads to disaster. 𝗔 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 1. Use slow, rational thinking for big decisions Career, marriage, investments, business moves. Check for cognitive biases like a pilot checklist. 2. Use intuition for small decisions If the downside is tiny, don’t waste mental energy optimising. 3. Trust your gut only inside your circle of competence It’s smaller than you think. Inside it → intuition works. Outside it → think slowly and carefully. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 You don’t need to know the secret to success. You just need to remove what leads to failure. 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆: - emotional reactions - herd mentality - rushed decisions - overconfidence - complexity - anything outside your competence 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 “𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱,” 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿.
